All About the Marching Chiefs Second Annual 2K Fundraiser

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

The world-renowned Florida State University Marching Chiefs are putting on their second annual 5K run fundraiser. The Marching Chiefs are a staple here at Florida State and they participate in many athletic events such as football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer games. In addition to athletic events, the Chiefs bring the sound of FSU to the Block Party on Friday nights and the Legacy Walk on game day. The Marching Chiefs performances do not just revolve around game days. Their high status has also allowed them to play for the arrival of the President of Botswana here at Florida State. This year they have also accepted an invitation to play on the beaches of Normandy in the summer of 2019 on the anniversary of D-Day.

In order to keep a band of 422 members running, a decent amount of funding is required. The 5K is a fundraiser that is put on by the Gamma Nu chapter of the national honorary band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi. The race will take place on Oct. 21, 2018 starting at 9 am. Informational packet pickup will take place on Oct. 18 and 19 on the Marching Chiefs field between 4 and 6 pm. During this time the Marching Chiefs will be hard at work putting on this season’s Homecoming Show. The Marching Chiefs very own drum major, Katie Olney, has earned a spot on the Florida State Homecoming Court. So when you swing by to grab your packet, take a second to watch the Marching Chiefs in action and see a little bit of the behind the scenes work.

The course will wind through Florida State’s campus offering a challenging but beautiful run. Everyone who registers will receive a participation award, a Marching Chief 5k t-shirt, and a race bib.  Be sure to hang around after the race for the music, food, and raffles that will be available.

Come out and support the men and women who work hard to highlight the tradition and excellence that Florida State University represents. These ideals are also highlighted in the inaugural Marching Chiefs 5k Trailer put together for the event!
