7 Reasons Why Breckenridge, Colorado Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

We’re back with another themed week on the site: Travel Week. This semester, Her Campus FSU has created themed weeks dedicated to exclusive content we believe all of our readers should have access to. Keep up on the site for the next few days as we cover everything from the best places you need to roadtrip to before you graduate to the top eats across the pond (that’s London town, for those of you who haven’t brushed up on your British). We promise we’ll leave you wanderlusting for more. After all, summer vacation is just a few weeks away!

After Spring Break our timelines are filled with pictures from our friends’ beach getaways and booze cruises to the Bahamas. Going to the beach so many times can ultimately get boring, especially if you’re looking for a destination that’s beautiful, thrilling and unforgettable. Here’s why Breckenridge, Colorado should be your next vacation spot.

1. The Breathtaking Views

Being a Floridian, snow is not the first thing we’re accustomed to. Even if you have been around snow before, it’s nothing like the snow atop the Rocky Mountains. Everywhere you look, the mountains have a snowy backdrop that makes any place in Breckenridge perfect for a photo op. Just imagine looking out your window every morning to this gorgeous view.

2. Skiing and Snowboarding in the Rockies

If you love a good adrenaline rush, you have to go shred for at least one day when you’re in Colorado. You’ll never find a better place to learn how to ski or snowboard than on the fresh powder in the mountains of Colorado. Although it might be difficult to pick up at first, it will give you one of the best workouts of your life, and you will have the best views of the mountains from up top! You could even strap a GoPro to your helmet to have permanent memories of you falling once, twice or even ten times.

3. The Dispensaries

For those of you who may enjoy marijuana for either recreational or medical use, the plant is completely legal in Colorado for anyone over the age of 21 (with restrictions of course). In Breckenridge, there are many marijuana dispensaries, including the Breckenridge Cannabis Club. It was featured on the show High Profits, which you can watch on Netflix. If you aren’t a fan, it’s still a cool experience to be able to look around inside the stores, because you can’t take pictures inside! You could even pick up some cannabis lip balm or lotion just to commemorate the experience.

4. Oxygen Bars

This is definitely something you won’t find in Florida. Due to the altitude change, many visitors can experience sickness with symptoms such as lack of appetite, headaches and dizziness. Luckily, Breckenridge has an oxygen bar! It’s just like your typical coffee shop – complete with comfy couches, a full espresso bar, cool music playing in the background and of course, the different flavors of oxygen. They sell different varieties depending on what you’re looking for – relaxation, energy or even clarity. After 15 minutes of just hanging out and breathing in the oxygen, you’ll be back to feeling like yourself again.

5. Dog Sledding

Dog sledding was one of the most exciting things that I did on my visit to Breckenridge. You can take turns being the “musher,” and actually lead the dogs through the snowy mountains. These huskies are completely trained and absolute sweethearts. After the age of 8, they retire from dogsledding and go up for adoption, but are only given to those who can prove residency in a northern state that gets snow. (Just another reason to move to Colorado!)

6. The Food

Breckenridge is full of hole-in-the-wall type places with delicious food, including Daylight Donuts pictured above. These are the best donuts you will ever have in your entire life. People are always lined up outside in the bitter cold just to get a box of the day’s freshly baked donuts. They also have other breakfast and lunch options, including the most amazing blueberry pancakes in the world.

7. Main Street

You could spend all day on Main Street in downtown Breckenridge and never be bored. Filled with skiing and snowboarding rental gear shops, boutiques, spas and restaurants, there are plenty of things to see and do. Around Christmas and New Years Eve, downtown is filled with lights, Christmas trees and endless decorations that make it an amazing sight to see. Seeing the New Years Eve fireworks displayed downtown is truly an experience everyone should be able to cross off their bucket list.

As you can see, Breckenridge is truly one of the most beautiful and thrilling places you could ever take a vacation. After one day in the little mountain town, you’ll discover why everyone loves ‘Breck.
