2020 for many, was a year full of delay and cancelation. From vacations to in-person schooling and work, all previously made plans were suddenly up in the air and questionable. The cancelations and delays did not exclude film production, as we saw many TV shows and movies cancel filming, extend production, etc. to accommodate needs and mandates during the COVID pandemic. That being said, there is a line-up of movies scheduled to be released in 2021 that have found ways to overcome the challenges and provide the entertainment that 2020 put on pause for us.

1. Black Widow

Black Widow is set to come to select theatres on May 7, 2021. This “action-packed spy thriller” is starring Scarlett Johansson as Marvel Cinematic Universe’s, Black Widow. The film pushes Natasha Romanoff, to confront her past life—before she joined the Avengers as Black Widow—where she worked as a Soviet agent. Although Black Widow’s character passing away in Avengers: Endgame left fans confused at this upcoming release, the timeline of this film actually follows after the events that occurred in MCU’s Captain America: Civil War, when Natasha ends the film in danger.

2. In the Heights

Coming to local cities and also being released on HBO a little over a month after Black Widow premieres, is In the Heights. (June 18) In the Heights is a musical movie written by award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda and produced by Jon M. Chu. The movie was derived from the stage musical production, In the Heights which was also written by Lin-Manuel. Set in Manhattan’s Washington Heights, this film follows the story of Usnavi and the large Hispanic community that resides there. Their block as they once knew it, has been disappearing over the years as higher-income groups begin moving in, pushing out the lower-income residents.

Written by Jordan Peele, who you may know as the writer of Us and Key and Peele, is the movie, Candyman. IMDB states that this film is a “spiritual sequel” to the horror film Candyman” that came out in 1992. In the movie, Candyman, the monster, is considered a legend in the Chicago neighborhood, but when Anthony moves in, he accidentally discovers that the legend is more of a reality than he once believed. This must-see horror film is scheduled to premiere in theatres on Aug. 27!
