The Deal About Promise Rings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Franklin chapter.

My boyfriend gave me a promise ring over a year ago. It has always been important to me, but especially so since he left for his mission.

However, a few problems have come up regarding my ring.

When I first got it, my friends told me you always wear rings from a significant other on your left hand ring finger, even if it’s not an engagement ring. I took them at their word, having no experience in this area, and I have worn the ring there ever since.

Some people, however, do not think this is a good idea. They say wearing a promise ring on your left hand ring finger shows a commitment that may not really exist. That can lead to a lot of pain and hurt in the end.

But does it alwayshave to lead to hurt?

I don’t want to move the ring because of its significance to me, but in all honesty, I haven’t ever made any official engagement commitment.  I know things change over time, but I do believe that love can overcome all sorts of obstacles.

I guess the jury’s still out on this one.
