Pros and Cons of Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

With Halloween over, most people are in Christmas-mode now, but Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. Depending on your situation it could be different, but most college students who live on campus go home for Thanksgiving. This mini break has its pros and cons.

Pro: the food

Thanksgiving has definitely become one of those holidays where people only care about the food. Whether this is a good thing or bad thing is a whole different discussion, but it’s true. Food on Thanksgiving tastes ten times better for college students who have been living off of dining hall food and Doritos for the past 3 months.

Con: feeling like you gained 30 pounds after eating everything

The downside to all the good food is you eat everything in sight, which can leave you feeling sick afterwards.

Pro: seeing your family

After being away from home for a while it’s nice to catch up with the family members you actually missed.

Con: seeing your family

Family during the holidays can be stressful, too. There’s always going to be that aunt who asks you if you have a boyfriend, that conservative uncle who brings up politics, and that cousin who asks you what on earth you’re going to do with a degree in (insert your major here.) If you can bite your tongue in these situations, great. If you can’t, like myself most of the time, I also think it’s good to stick up for yourself even if they are your family.

Pro: sleeping in your own bed

I would say the thing I miss the most about being home when I’m at school is definitely sleeping in my bed. Also, just sleeping in general and not having to worry about waking up early for class or work.

Con: the break is short

Other schools may be different, but here at Framingham we only get Thursday and Friday and the weekend that follows off from classes. The break goes by too fast and 4 days doesn’t feel like enough time to do everything you want.

Pro: good timing

Thanksgiving break falls just after the first half of the semester is over, so it’s a nice break from homework and classes after midterms.

Con: you still have a month left after it’s over

Going home for Thanksgiving makes me want winter break to come faster. For some reason I always feel like there’s only a couple weeks left after Thanksgiving (for some schools that may be true) but in reality there’s 4 weeks left.
