Netflix’s The Princess Switch: Save Your Time and Just Watch The Parent Trap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Released earlier this November on Netflix, The Princess Switch helped jumpstart Netflix’s onslaught of Christmas movies for this season. Directed by Michael Rohl, with no other significant directorial roles worth mentioning, and written by Robin Bernheim, who funny enough also writes for A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, this movie was Netflix’s attempt to continue their success of last year’s A Christmas Prince.

The Princess Switch stars Vanessa Hudgens, an actress who so many of us have grown up watching in the High School Musical trilogy. Hudgens has always had a special place in my heart, especially following her brief music career with her hits “Say OK” and “Sneakernight”. However, I am extremely disappointed Hudgens willingly took this role.

This movie is terrible. Even for the cheesy Hallmark movie fan. It follows the story of Stacey, a Chicago baker, who travels to a fancy European sounding country to participate in a baking competition with her friend Kevin. Kevin is, of course, handsome. Upon arriving to Belgravia, Stacey encounters the Dutchess Margaret, who convinces her to switch places since they look alike. Stacey falls in love with Prince Edward who Margaret was planned to marry, while Margaret falls in love with Kevin, one of the two people of color in the entire movie. A happy ending ensues.

Keep reading to see how The Princess Switch blatantly copies other movies.

Stacey has the exact same reaction as Mia Thermopolis when realizing she can be a princess!

The Copying of A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince wasn’t even that good, so I don’t know why they decided to copy the same scenes. See how Prince Edward and Prince Richard are both balding white men and ride on horses in front of a green-screened winter landscape.

Using the minority as a little girl and as a matchmaker. Lovely.

Honorable mention: The entire plot of Monte Carlo

Vanessa Hudgens deserved so much better than The Princess Switch. Her hairstyle made her look ten years older, her accent was cringey, and no one in this movie could pronounce “schedule”. There were no well-developed antagonists in this movie, Stacey’s baking career was a weird insert, and every scene with Vanessa acting with her double was just choppy and weirdly done. The Parent Trap from 1998 was seriously more convincing. There were obvious green screens in every scene with a wide landscape, the dialogue and jokes were cringe-worthy, and it was just bad.

Skip this movie. Please.
