This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

She describes herself as caring, a result of knowing what it feels like to be excluded and wanting to include each and every person as much as possible. Meet Kara Swanson, a junior at Framingham State University from Billerica, MA. Kara is a fashion design and retailing major with a concentration in apparel construction as well as a minor in business administration. She has always been into fashion. As a kid, since she was into drawing, she would draw outfits for people and judge them based on what she thought was best, as well as make paper dolls and put fabric on them. Kara has always loved putting outfits together for others. She considers herself to be very creative. Her goal is to become a personal stylist; to be able to help people put their outfits together and furthermore creating her own clothing line. Kara is a transfer student from Southern New Hampshire University. She got the opportunity to tour a University in Italy, however she noticed the University had a design lab, which was the opposite of what she desired. Her idea was more of the business side of the fashion industry. She chose Framingham State University because it’s relatively close to home, affordable, a small school, and two alumni were featured on Project Runway, which brought her to understand that there was a really good fashion program.

In her free time she likes to be involved around campus. Kara is the secretary of the fashion club. She loves to go to different restaurants and try exotic foods, something that most people may not want to try. Her family and friends are incredibly important to her. Kara also likes to draw, go to the gym, and go shopping. As you already know, she likes to be involved, which is one of the few reasons she decided to join Her Campus. At Southern New Hampshire University, Kara was in a sorority. Framingham State does not offer sororities however, she decided she wanted something close to that. Kara enjoys Her Campus because it reminds her of having a group of sisters and she enjoys the feeling of being surrounded by a group of friendly girls.

Overcoming anxiety was Kara’s biggest accomplishment. Going to school, she would have panic attacks. Eventually, she managed to realize that going to school was okay. She went on a Florida trip that she would have never done without her family, as well as going on a trip to Italy in high school. She also considers living on campus another big accomplishment she’s made. Kara considers anyone around her age who is constantly trying to better themselves as a role model and someone who inspires her. She likes to witness people trying to further their career. Seeing people succeed inspires her.

She views her best quality as being extremely caring. She wants to make sure everyone feels as if they’re included. If she notices anyone sitting by themselves, she’ll invite them to sit with her so they feel included. A fun fact about Kara is that she can play the violin. She has played since fourth grade and she took it all the way to her senior year in high school. Although she never wanted to play, her parents pushed her to and she’s forever grateful for that. Not a lot of people can say they know how to play a musical instrument. Playing violin also made her appreciate music in away that she never once did. Kara is extremely caring, very involved, and overall a very hardworking, goal oriented girl.
