Halloween Costumes to Avoid this Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Halloween is the only time of year where you can be whoever you want to be. However, you shouldn’t be just anyone. There are definitely certain costumes you should not wear to that Halloween party because it is way too popular this year or it is offensive.

1. Any cultural appropriation

This should go without saying, but sadly people still do it. Someone’s culture should NEVER be your costume. If you’re not sure if your Halloween costume is cultural appropriate then that might be a sign you shouldn’t do it.

2. Wonder Woman

The movie was a huge hit over the summer so it’s safe to say a lot of women will do their own interpretation of the badass hero. While she is a great costume idea you might bump into 20 others at a Halloween party. This happened to plenty of Harley Quinns last year. Maybe stay away from a Harley Quinn costume this year too just to be safe.

3. Clowns

Similar to Wonder Woman, there’s probably going to be more than enough clown costumes this year because of the movie IT’s success. Also clowns are weird.

4. Mermaids

This one is kind of heartbreaking to say. There’s so much you can do with a mermaid costume, however, there might be a few too many due to the popularity of the “mermaid aesthetic” from the past year or so. This might just be me, though.

5. Sexy Costumes

Unless you bring a jacket or it’s a hot Halloween, it’s not worth freezing for a small costume. I’m also a strong believer that a tank top with a beer logo on it is not a costume.

6. Stranger Things Group Costume

There’s going to be a lot of Elevens carrying a box of Eggos

7. Guardians of the Galaxy

This is mostly about Groots and Peter Quill. Since the sequel came out this year we’ll be hearing multiple “I am Groot” responses and just to the question “What are you?”

8. Game of Thrones

There’s going to be a lot of mothers of dragons this Halloween, similar to every Halloween since the show premiered.

9. Harry Potter

Going out as a typical Hogwarts student isn’t bad but I’ve always heard people be surprised that they’re not the only Gryffindor at the bar. So if you choose to wear your quidditch costume don’t be upset if there’s a whole team there.

Of course this is just one person’s opinion. If you’re dying to go as one of the mentioned costumes, go for it! Except for number one on the list. Just don’t.
