Is Glossier’s Makeup Worth the Hype (and Price?)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Priming Moisturizer $22

This is a primer that doubles to act as a moisturizer, though it is primarily advertised to prime Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint. To be honest, this primer doesn’t leave that much of a visual difference in my skin. My skin doesn’t change to all one shade and my pores look the same. The biggest difference it does make though is the texture of my skin. It becomes much softer and does feel “bouncier” like is advertised. A little does go a long way also, so the size of the tube is reasonable. I just don’t know if it’s worth $22. I feel like if I just used a moisturizer, my makeup would go on just as well.

Perfecting Skin Tint in G11 $26

Glossier just released 12 shades of their Perfecting Skin Tint and their Stretch Concealer. The shades are categorized into Light, Medium, Deep, and Rich, with each category having three shades of different undertones. This is a much better range than previously, where there were only 5 shades, though the products are so thin it’s easy to match a variety of skin tones. The skin tint acts as a very sheer base; it would be wrong to classify it as a foundation. The formula is more liquid than you would expect, though I believe the closest it would resemble is a BB cream. It is very light coverage as is advertised, so much so that is doesn’t cover freckles or marks and lightly covers redness. However, it does leave a great dewy effect, almost like I’m already wearing highlighter. Again, I just don’t know if it’s worth $26.

Stretch Concealer in G11 $18

The Stretch Concealer follows the same shades as the Perfecting Skin Tint, and it is recommended that the shade you get in the tint is the same you get for the concealer, similar to the Fenty Beauty foundation and concealer. The concealer, like the rest of Glossier’s makeup, is light, but this definitely has more coverage than the skin tint. I like a concealer that isn’t too full coverage or cakey, so this is perfect for me. If the skin tint isn’t doing it for you, you could use this concealer to cover most of the face instead. The only odd issue I’ve been having is that my mascara has been smudging underneath my eyes a lot more than usual. Before this concealer, I usually didn’t wear concealer at all and my mascara stayed on fine. So I don’t know if this smudging is because of this concealer, because the mascara is bad, or because I’ve been rubbing my eyes more.

Boy Brow in Brown $16

This is probably one of my favorite products that I bought. And it’s the cheapest. It is similar to most other brow gels I’ve used, though it may be a bit more pigmented. The most important difference for me is the small tip of the wand. Unlike other brow gels that have a wand similar in size to a mascara wand, this one is almost half the size. It makes it so much easier to control and to get the correct pigment you want, since the color is buildable with the amount of pressure you apply and product you use. The only issue I think I may have is the amount of product in the tube. It seems like I’ll run out fast! Overall though, I will probably buy this again.

Cloud Paint Blush in Beam $18

The Cloud Paints are a collection of cream blushes that come in six shades, ranging from light pinks and peaches to a dark rose color. The shade Beam is a light peach color that out of the tube, is almost a neon orange. Similar to every other Glossier product though, this cream blush is extremely sheer and a little goes a long way since its incredibly pigmented. Since my cheeks are red throughout the day anyway, and the skin tint doesn’t do that much to cover them up, I tend to over apply this blush. My cheeks still tend to lean more to the pink side rather than peach, but this is a perfect shade to apply to the chin and across the nose for a more summer and sun-kissed look. It’s a great shade to still look like yourself but add a little more cuteness. I’m excited to see how it looks when I’m a little more tan over the summer and have more freckles. The color also goes great with the color dark blue I’ve noticed? Overall, I do like this blush and definitely want to buy more shades soon.

Haloscope Highlighter in Quartz $22

The Haloscope highlighters come in three shades, Topaz, Quartz, and Moonstone. Quartz is a nice pearly pink shade rather than the pure white of Moonstone. It is a pretty chunky highlighter stick and it applies smoothly. It’s a step above a natural highlight, but a little less than a blinding highlight. It’s a good combination between shine and dewiness, and applies great for the cheeks and down the center of the face. It does last for a while, but my one complaint is that it stays sticky throughout the day until it finally disappears into the face a couple hours later. Though I haven’t tried it, I feel like putting a powder highlighter over it might tone down the stickiness, though it would increase the pigment.

Conclusion

Glossier is a brand meant for the no makeup makeup kind of person. It’s also meant for people who already have great skin and a great face. For those of us who are looking to shorten our makeup routine or be less cakey with powders, this might be a great brand to try. For those of us who rely on full coverage and like more dramatic and artsy looks, this is not the brand to look into.

My biggest issue is the prices for these products. Glossier does offer bundles for a discounted price, such as buying the skin tint and concealer together or two blushes. They also often offer free shipping and free samples. However, buying a full face of makeup here is pricey. Although the Stretch Concealer, Boy Brow, and Cloud Paints were hits for me, I fell into the hype of this brand a little fast and can’t say I would repurchase the rest of these products.
