4 Shows I Binge-Watched This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Summer is the perfect time to sit by the pool, take a trip to the beach, or go on a hike in the sunshine. It’s also the perfect time to binge-watch TV shows while lying in front of a fan and eating popsicles. I’m not ashamed to say that I spent the majority of my summer doing the latter (maybe I’m a little ashamed, but I can’t change the past). Here are 4 series that I binge-watched during these last 3 months and where you can watch them too.

Cable Girls (Las chicas de cable)

I might be a little biased since I am a Spanish minor, but this show had me hooked from the start. Cable girls (or Las chicas del cable) is set in the late 1920s in Madrid, Spain. It focuses on four women with very different backgrounds as they work as operators for a phone company. Each woman goes through their fair share of drama whether it be work-related or relationship problems. I loved this show, because it’s full of strong women who are fighting for their independence in a time when the only acceptable thing for women to do was find a husband. I also loved the friendship that develops between the cable girls. The show is originally in Spanish, but can be dubbed to English or you can add English subtitles. If, like me, you’ve watched other popular telenovelas, you’ll recognize some familiar faces like Yon González (El internado and Gran Hotel), Martiño Rivas (El internado), Blanca Suárez (El internado) and Concha Velasco (Gran Hotel). Cable Girls is a Netflix original. The first part of season 2 is set to be released this December.

Single By 30

If you’re a big YouTube watcher then I highly recommend this series. It’s a mini series with only 8 episodes that are around 25 minutes each—perfect for binging in one night (which I definitely didn’t do…) This comedy/drama is about two friends, Peter (Harry Shum Jr.) and Joanna (Kina Grannis) who made a pact when they were seniors in high school that if they were both still single when they were 30 years old they would get married. After losing touch with each other, they are reconnected conveniently just before their 30th birthdays. This show made me both laugh and cry during the 4 hours that I spent watching it in one sitting. You can watch this mini series on YouTube Red, which offers the first month free when you subscribe.

The Bold Type

When this show first came out in June of this year, the commercials didn’t really catch my interest. But, as the season progressed I kept seeing good reviews about it online and I’m so happy I made the decision to watch it. It’s set in New York City and centers on the lives and the friendship between Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy), 3 girls who work for a global magazine. The show is full of women empowerment and brings awareness to important subjects that are relevant in today’s society, like immigration and sexual assault, to name a few. You can watch the first season of The Bold Type on Freeform’s website by signing in with your cable provider.

Riverdale

I just finished this series a few days ago, but it’s still technically summer and I’m still lying in front of my fan, so it counts. This show is based off of the Archie Comics, which I haven’t read, so I can’t say anything about the comics, but the show is the perfect combination of a murder mystery and a classic high school drama. It takes place in a town called Riverdale and focuses on high school students Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), as they deal with the murder of their fellow classmate and Cheryl’s brother, Jason. I definitely didn’t get bored watching this with all of the plot twists and suspense that’s jam-packed into every episode. You can watch the first season of Riverdale on Netflix. Season 2 returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 11th.
