Politically Correct with Hans Lueders

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

It’s hard to find a Fordham student who hasn’t heard of Hans Lueders. From his wit and charm, to his German name and dreadlocks, he really can’t be missed. As a sophomore, Hans has already begun leaving his mark on Fordham, and the world, by being involved in multiple on and off-campus activities. You’ve probably seen him Tuesday evenings on Fordham Nightly News, or even at the “Taste the World” event sponsored by ASILI which he recently emceed. Hans is always ready to strike up a conversation with someone new, and he keeps his friends laughing with his endless charismatic humor. There really is no one else like Hans Lueders, so here’s your chance to get to know him!

Where are you from? A little bit of everywhere.

What year are you? In sophomore slump.

What is your major? I’m double majoring in political science and communications, but if that fails, I’ll just minor in communications.

What activities are you involved in? Fordham Nightly News, Black Student Alliance, College Democrats, and intramural soccer – in addition, I record music with BET contest winner Dayne Carter and am in the process of making my own webseries.

What has been the most rewarding part of being so involved? I get to interact with a lot of different groups and individuals, and I really love making connections with people.

How did you decide to come to Fordham? I always knew it was a good school with a great Political Science program, plus it’s close to home in New York, which is the greatest place in the world.

Do you have any tips for students who are trying to balance schoolwork, extracurriculars, and other obligations like internships? No matter how stressful you think it can be, it’s not the end of the world. All you need to do is relax and don’t be afraid to try new things to find your groove.

What’s your favorite thing about New York? It’s the Empire City! Where else in the world is there such a unique nexus of people and culture?

Do you have a favorite NYC memory? When I was in fifth grade, we took a field trip to Liberty Island, and I remember being on the boat looking back at the New York skyline and thinking that I couldn’t imagine feeling this connected to anywhere else.

What’s on your NYC bucket list? I have never had breakfast at Tiffany’s.

What’s your favorite class you’ve taken at Fordham? Intro to Politics – my teacher came in kimonos and headphones every day and our curriculum consisted of looking at the virtual world and what politics meant to us.

What’s your least favorite class you’ve taken at Fordham? Structures of Computer Science – I just can’t summon the willpower to do math anymore; I’m screwed when I have to start worrying about vast finances.

What’s your dream job? I just want to be in a position where I can reach out to a lot of people, but if I had to definitively say I’d be a talk show host like Stephen Colbert.

What do you think the best part of a Jesuit education is? The mission: helping our fellow human being always has to be the mission for us, especially since our generation is about to inherit such a mess of a planet.

What’s one thing everyone would be surprised to learn about you? Sometimes I still get nervous when I talk to crowds and have to talk myself down.

Pick one!

Bronx Zoo or Botanical Gardens? Bronx Zoo e’erday – it’s free on Wednesdays and it’s full of wildlife…I can see flowers everywhere but who turns down the opportunity to see a lion?

Arthur Ave or Fordham Road? Fordham Road – I appreciate good fashion and it’s full of affordable but quality things to buy.

Cafeteria or Grille? Best Deli – I’m a sucker for a good reuben sandwich, what of it?

Conway or Dr. Jay’s? Dr. Jay’s – in the words of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter you gotta feel “photoshoot fresh, looking like wealth.”

Ram Van or Subway? Subway – however you feel, I guarantee you’re gonna come out of the subway with many more stories to tell.

Hot Dog or Bagel? Hot Dog – New York City hot dogs must be considered among the best delicacies in the Western Hemisphere.

Broadway or Off-Broadway? Broadway – it’s a close call but if you ever have the chance to see a Broadway show, take it…they’re really memorable!

Radio City of Madison Square Garden? Radio City – another close call but, around Christmas time check it out…you’ll understand.

Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge? Central Park – it really is a sort of oasis in a jungle of glass and steel towers, you can just slow down from the immeasurable speed of the city.
