My First Month As A Ram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

Members of the class of 2018 have officially been Rams for one month. That is pretty monumental step for us, considering for most of the freshman class, it’s the first time we’ve had the chance to figure things out all by ourselves. I, for one, have had the most amazing month and can’t believe it’s already over. For a girl from an uncomfortably small town outside of Boston, leaving home and coming to New York City was an overwhelming (in the best way) and eye-opening experience. For once, everything was at the tip of my fingers and I now have the mentality that truly anything is possible. After this month, I have learned so much and here is what I have to say about that:

  • They weren’t kidding when they said you make friends that you already know you’ll love forever.
  • You come here for the best education you’ve received in your life. But, plot twist: You’re learning about things that are actually interesting. In high school, classes dragged on for a million years and I had the “this won’t help me later on in life” mentality just making the entire experience worse. Here, class flies by because listening to a professor who is fantastic at what they do is actually enjoyable. (Unless its math…I’ve yet to enjoy that.)
  • You have already grown so much from the high school student you were just a few months ago. There is so much perspective to gain in this new place. That perspective will continue to grow for the next four years. I can’t wait to say I know NYC like the back of my hand.
  • Now is the time to explore and try absolutely everything! Everyone has said so many times to us since we’ve gotten here to join a bunch of clubs, but seriously, what’s holding you back? This is a totally fresh start. Get into what really makes you feel content and confident!
  • Believe it or not, every little experience you encounter is shaping your knowledge of how to start a new life all on your own. I’ve never been on my own this way and I’m really excited to jump into this college adventure with everything I have.
  • Everyone has always said to just be yourself. I’m here to tell you the exact same thing. You are surrounded by so many new people and you will find some who will love the you with no makeup on and the stupid jokes only you thought were funny. The love I have discovered for my new, fun and wonderful friends is astounding and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
  • There is no point in trying to act like someone different or uphold an image that you think will impress someone else. Live your life for you and only you and it will work out.

The first month here has been so fun and full of new and fantastic things. I can’t help but imagine how exceptional the rest of the year will be. Keep an open mind and continue to chase after the things that make you happy!
