The Latest Sustainable Companies in NYC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

In today’s modern world, climate change & the impending doom that scientists preach is ever-present. Because of this, it is imperative that companies, those that contribute most to the mistreatment of our planet, take the necessary precautions & work to protect our Earth. Here are a few super cool companies right here in New York City that are taking environmental consciousness to heart:

MOVE Systems

Mobile food vendors have always resorted to using expensive & pollution-heavy power, like gasoline & diesel generators. MOVE was founded to solve this problem. They manufacture mobile food carts that are equipped with today’s most innovative technology, ranging from solar panels to battery-powered electric systems, making street food vendors in NYC more & more sustainable – & cheaper!

The 4th Bin

4th Bin is currently one of the only companies in NYC that picks up electronic waste from local businesses & residents. With an easy door-to-door e-waste system, 4th Bin provides a simple & inexpensive recycling solution & also creates sustainable technology management solutions.

Gotham Greens

Gotham Greens grows fresh produce in greenhouses all around the city, engaging in sustainable & technologically-innovative agricultural processes, completely free of pesticides. Powered by 100% clean energy, Gotham Greens’ greenhouses can be found in several unthinkable places – like our apartment rooftops!

Big Reuse

Big Reuse recycles millions of pounds of usable building materials that would have otherwise ended up in a city landfill. This program gives homeowners, film production crews, large-scale construction projects, etc. a place to drop off their unwanted building supplies & furniture. Big Reuse then gives these materials another life, reclaiming them into every construction & design supply imaginable.

Empire Brewing Company

Who doesn’t love a good ale? But do we actually understand how much creating a beer & bringing it to market affects our environment? Empire Brewing Co. is an award-winning brewer of handcrafted ales & lagers, always striving to become as green as possible. Their sustainability initiatives include everything from shipping spent grains from their brewing processes to local livestock companies for feed, to using biodegradable paper products. Check them out!

While it is important that we push companies in the direction of becoming fully environmentally-friendly, it is also on us to practice what we preach. What are you going to do this Earth Day to participate in modern sustainability?
