How to Stay Close to your High School Squad After Graduation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

When you’re buried in homework, camping out in the library everyday, high school may seem like an eternity ago, but your friendships are still just as important. It’s easy to get consumed in college responsibilities and the excitement of being in a new and exciting city, but you can’t forget about all those bonds that go you here. However great your new friends are, your friends from home are the ones who have seen you in your brace-face stage, been with you through those tragic middle school break ups, and made you laugh until you cried. Don’t forget that they are going through the same adjustment as you are. Check out these 5 ways to make sure you stay close to your high school squad.

1. Go visit!

Just because you don’t live in the same town anymore doesn’t mean that you can’t hang out on the occasional weekend. If your friends school is close by, look up how much a train or bus ticket is to go see them. Spend a day exploring their new town, and getting to know their friends.

2. Have Face-Time dates

Seeing friends doesn’t have to be a whole event. Instead of planning a visit, make a Face-Time date. Choose a day that works for both of you and make time in your busy schedules to catch up. Even if it’s just a 5 minute call on your way to class, it’ll make you feel a bit more connected to home.

3. Make plans to take a summer vacation together

Summer might be the last thing on your mind when you’re camped out in the library during midterms season, but planning a fun summer trip with your squad is a sure way to make sure you stay connected. Even if it’s just a stay-cation filled with movies and popcorn, having a plan and sticking to it will guarantee that you don’t lose touch.

4. Keep the group chat alive

One of the simplest and most effective ways to stay connected with your high school squad is to keep the group chat alive. Anything from a meme you know they’d find funny to a quick hello will show that you’re thinking about them.

5. Send mail!

There’s nothing better than getting that notification that you have a package. It makes it a million times better when it’s from one of your high school best friends. Just knowing that your friend is there, thinking about you makes the stress of school seem so much more manageable. Not to mention, all the great snacks that they most likely packed.
