COVID x Halloween 2020: Fun Ways To Stay Safe This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

Halloween is no doubt looking a little different this year with trick-or-treating regulations, limits on social gatherings, and making sure your mask matches your costume. This year, the only thing scarier than horror film and gruesome decorations is the fear of contracting COVID-19. In order to get things back to “normal” and allow for further future expansions on all activities is to do the best we can now to slow the spread of the virus. With that being said, however, it doesn’t mean you can’t still have a great Halloween! Here are just a few tips and fun ideas for this year’s Halloween!

Movie Night

One of my favorite parts of Halloween, or anytime really, is being able to curl up on the couch with a few friends to spend the night watching movies while eating a big bucket of candy. Here is a great collection of some of the best scary movies, both old and new

Craft/Decorating Party!

Carving or painting pumpkins is a super fun way to get in the Halloween spirit without putting yourself at potential risk. You can carve or paint your pumpkins with those you live with or get a group of friends together to host a virtual pumpkin party and vote for the best one at the end! It’s also super fun to buy or make your own decorations to put up all over your house, apartment or dorm! Just like with the pumpkins, start your own spooky door contest and judge them based on scare factor, creativity and originality.

Halloween Baking!

I think the best part of the Halloween season is all the spooky, yet delicious, treats that only appear in the stores once a year or the ones that allow you to get creative in your own kitchen! Decorating cookies is a great thing to do at home with friends and family. If you can’t be with loved ones at the moment though, you can always surprise them by safely leaving some treats at their door or shipping them to those who live far away. My favorite place for Halloween baking inspo is Pinterest and here are a few links to my favorite treats to recreate!

Costume Party!

Last but not least is to have a safe costume party! In either small groups (while adhering to social distancing guidelines) or all online you can set up a costume party with your friends. Everyone can come up with their own individual ideas or you can all decide on a theme like characters from a movie or TV show or different decades!

I hope this gives you a few fun and safe alternatives to going out this year! Also, make sure to check out the CDC posted guidelines and recommendations for holiday celebrations (because that’s the world we live in now :/ )
