3 Reasons to Pick Up The Wangs vs. The World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

This month I read Jade Chang’s novel The Wangs vs. The World. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of heart the book has. If you’re thinking of reading it, here are 3 reasons to pick it up ASAP.

1. It explores the concept of identity.

Figuring out who you are is hard for anybody, and it’s a journey that never truly ends. Plus, it’s even harder to solidify your identity when coming from an immigrant family. On top of that, imagine coming from a family that goes from rags to riches – just to go back to rags again. Finding your identity is never an easy feat and The Wangs vs. The World gives each character plenty to consider.

2. It bashes stereotypes.

Make a list of every stereotype that comes to mind when you think of an Asian-American family and then shred it. The Wangs are each stand out characters and vibe to their own rhythm; a rhythm of art, comedy, fashion, and teenage angst. There is no old fashioned parenting style here.

3. It reminds you that family is the cornerstone of the American Dream.

The American Dream is the idea that anyone can work her way up from nothing to something. The American Dream is what incites so many people to immigrate to the U.S. The idea of achieving anything through hard work is a simple yet powerful one. Sometimes you can get too caught up in the idea of work and success, but that’s what family is for.

Chang’s novel has even more to offer. Pick up your copy and it won’t disappoint.
