My time with Good Molecules University is hitting the halfway mark, and so far I’ve already gained more than I could’ve hoped for.
For those who don’t know, the skincare brand Good Molecules has a campus ambassador program called Good Molecules University. Through this semester-long program, you learn the ins and outs of social media marketing, PR management, public speaking, and so much more. Here are some of my favorite things I’ve gotten to experience thanks to the program.
First, to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Growing up, I was a very introverted person and struggled to speak in front of anyone. Having to table and present the brand to different clubs was honestly my worst nightmare. But it wasn’t all bad, because the experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me build confidence. Sure, I still trip over my words and still get anxious before I go and talk, but being able to get over that hurdle makes me feel accomplished.
Another thing I’ve learned is how to create TikToks for the brand, which is something I wasn’t always passionate about. To me, it feels weird going online and “acting” like an influencer. But through GMU, I learned techniques for making these TikToks and other marketing strategies that I can use in my future. I’ve also learned how to edit videos, create engaging presentations, and work efficiently in Excel. Through GMU, you also get to join educational meetings that can help you with marketing and PR.
Furthermore, I learned how to engage students through campus outreach. By doing door knockers, where I distribute free products around campus, I discovered what students liked about the brand and how we can improve for the next semester. GMU always values students’ voices when looking for new ideas. For example, the pimple patches we give out were actually a product of students wanting them, showing how they help shape our program.
Lastly, I gained lots of experience working with other students. As part of GMU, you are assigned a team captain. Here at FIU, my team consists of my team captain, myself, and one other ambassador. Even though our team is small, we have to coordinate our activities to avoid overlapping club seeding, door-knocking, or tabling days. Being comfortable working with other people is something everyone has to learn, so I’m glad I got hands-on practice throughout my time in GMU.
Overall, GMU has helped me develop valuable marketing skills, confidence in public speaking, and strengthen my leadership abilities. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this semester holds!
