UK Bans Bench Bars Against Homeless

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Bournemouth Borough Council in the United Kingdom had approved bench bars that prevented the homeless from sleeping on public benches after receiving complaints that there were never enough to sit on. However, after protests broke out, the council rescinded its decision and has now banned the bars. Protestors, including famous rapper, Professor Green, felt the bars were cruel and inhumane. As a response, the public covered public benches with pillows, blankets and items that would make the benches cozy for anyone to sleep on. Many took to social media to spread awareness of the project. Officials say more than 19,500 people signed an online petition calling for the bars to be taken off. Councilor Robert Lawton released the following statement: “However we have listened to the extensive feedback over the last week and in light of the depth of feeling, have today reviewed that decision and agreed to have the bars removed.”
