These Gentle Giants Should NOT Be Banned, Here’s Why.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Unfortunately Pitbulls continue to be misunderstood and torn to pieces by many people in the United States. To this day, there are dog parks, and public places that do not allow these gentle giants into their enclosures or vicinity. These dogs are among the sweetest dogs on the planet, and they have been painted as demons because of the amount of times they have attacked people or other dogs. They have apparently killed 29 Americans in 2017, and in a commercial attempting to get air time during the super bowl, they speak about how they should no longer be adopted by people to end the “violence” they bring to the world. Here’s the issue with that, THEY ARE ANIMALS. The responsibility to train and become animals that don’t go haywire is up to the owner. That solely falls onto their laps, as they chose to adopt their dogs. If you don’t care for your pets, and leave them to pretty much fend for themselves, they’re going to behave based on their natural instincts to survive, and fun fact, this isn’t just an instinct that ONLY pertains to pit bulls! WOW AMAZING I KNOW. All dogs derive from wolves, which are natural predators in the wild. They hunt, live in packs, and defend themselves when necessary. The minute dogs feel threatened or uncomfortable, they begin to take on those characteristics because they feel their chances of survival are being limited. EVERY ANIMAL DOES THIS. I can’t even count on my hands and feet how many times someone’s pet has tried to bite me or attack one of my pets, and they were not once a pitbull. I grew up being warned to ask before petting someone’s dog or cat, and to go near them slowly to not threaten them. This is the case for any and every pet. If we want to talk about banning things that are ACTUALLY dangerous to the survival of humans and or lives in general, we should talk about getting rid of guns which cause about 13,000 homicides PER YEAR. This means, at least 96 people die PER DAY due to gun violence, a number significantly less than a mere than 29 people in an entire year. 88,000 people die per year due to alcohol, more than 64,000 AMERICANS died from drug abuse in 2016 alone, and 1.3 million people die per year from carried; but we’re worried about 29 people dying from a single animal in 2017, who let’s face it, probably wasn’t raised properly. I’m not at all denying the importance that these people had and the effect their deaths had on their families, but we should focus more on the things that are truly causing issues for the world. We should also focus on training our pets to behave well in public and at home, instead of trying to ban one breed. All animals have caused harm to humans one way or another, and as mentioned a million times over, it truly is the sole responsibility of the owner to make sure their pet is ready for the outside world. Your actions reflect on those around you, and it goes the same for raising your kids. If you consider your pet as a part of your family, then you should want to care and love them as much as possible so they turn out okay. Pit bulls are so loving, and plenty of people have reached out in social media to show off their loving gentle giants. This ban is ridiculous and shouldn’t be put in place.

A PSA to all pet owners, please don’t adopt pets if you are not ready for them. Too many pets wind up homeless and risk the chance of being hit by cars or killed in numerous ways. They risk the chance of being picked up by loving people but never being the same. I found my pet, may she rest in peace now, back in 2002 tied to a slide. Let’s take the initiative to make the world a better place for our animals, who really want nothing more than to love us and be loved, and remember to adopt instead of shop.
