Spring break: Alternatives to Miami Beach

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

The week we have been waiting for this semester is almost here! Most of us have been planning this since winter break (I am one of them). For the most part we all know what Miami natives want to do and that is lay out on that nice sand and soak up the sun on Miami Beach. To those people I say have fun out there with the rest of the world and all the traffic that comes with it especially if you plan to go out there around noon. Because let’s face it there’s always that one friend who is never ready on time. For those who want to do a bit more with your friends and loved ones there are other alternatives.

If you aren’t the most active person around or you are and want a new challenge then the Crandon Park Tennis center is for you. The location itself is beautiful and no matter what anyone else says tennis is not an easy sport. The same goes with golf for those of us who are first timers there are numerous driving ranges where you can practice your swing before heading out to the course and showing off your swing to the guys. Then again if you just want to go out and have fun and not make it competitive (which we all know it is) you can always play putt putt golf.

Now for those who prefer to be active in the water there are various ways to do so as well. There are a lot more beaches out there to be enjoyed and taken advantage of. There is a full range of beaches and activities to do such as Bill Baggs Cape Florida State beach where you can visit the historic lighthouse and oldest standing building in Miami-Dade County and once you’re done touring the lighthouse you can eat at the lighthouse café and enjoy various types of cuisine ranging from American, Latin, barbeque and seafood of course. Then there are haulover Beach Park, Hobie beach, and Sunny Isles beach amongst others. There are plenty of activities to do while you’re out in the sun such as walking and bicycle trails, jet skiing, jet lev (which you should look up if you don’t know what that is) wind surfing, which should definitely be done at hobie beach thus why it is nicknamed Windsurfer beach. Then when you’re done there you can go snorkeling, diving and even fishing if you’re into that at Sunny Isles Beach.

Then again if you love the ocean but don’t want to be outside and feel like being adventurous inside there is always the Miami Seaquarium filled with shows, exhibits and encounters with some cool animals for those who are brave enough to swim with dolphins, seals or huge sea turtles. No matter what you do this spring break remember to have fun, be safe and get back to campus safe! Have a great spring break and Go Panthers!

A kid raised in Brooklyn, New York home of fashion, art and great culture. The greatest thing to happen to me was living in the city in a sense it was a love/hate relationship because of the area in which I grew up in. Then there was Manhattan filled with all the lights and glamour and things that were on the big screen. Once I moved to Florida it was in a small town called Bradenton which was a huge culture shock because it was the total opposite from what I was used to in every sense ranging from transportation to people. Then there was the care free atmosphere in which shirts and shoes are optional and thong sandals are an every day thing opposed to the city where that is a rare find. Living in Bradenton gave me a different outlook on things and humbled me in a sense. Then moving to Miami for school brought me back to my city roots except with a different view on things and my motivation now is to gain success and not material things as I once dreamed of attaining.
