‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is the key to the Multiverses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

The long-waited trailer for Spiderman: No Way Home is finally here, and fans are raving. The trailer shows audiences a distressed Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the aftermath of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealed to the world that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Peter, along with his family and friends, are dealing with the consequences of Peter’s secret being out. Peter searches for help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to undo Peter’s secret identity from ever being revealed. Doctor Strange agrees to perform the spell, but Peter has second thoughts as he wants certain people to still know. Doctor Strange gets distracted with Peter’s second thought, loses control of the spell, and breaks reality.

Now what does this movie have to do with the Multiverse? Well, everything really. The trailer not only shows how Doctor Strange broke reality but opened a multiverse pathway for others, friend or foe, to cross over. The trailer showed alternate Spider-Man villains confronting Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. It showed Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock talking to Peter. Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin can be heard laughing and his famous pumpkin bomb comes on frame. Jamie Foxx’s Electro can’t physically be seen but his yellow lighting can. Other villains that are rumored to be in this film are Sandman and the Lizard. There are also rumors that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will reprise their Spider-Man roles to join forces with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. In addition, it’s been speculated that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will be in this film too.

This is it. The movie that can set up everything for Sony and Marvel Studios. This can allow Sony to expand on their Spider-Man franchise, especially with all the villains they are introducing. Mobius, for example, which is a movie that is coming up next after Spider-Man: No Way Home has Michael Keaton’s Vulture appear in the trailer, Kraven the Hunter and many more. Not to mention, they could introduce Miles Morales, from Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, in this universe as well. Only time will tell how Sony will unfold this. Now Marvel Studios is always ahead of the game as the next movie to follow up is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and with a title like that, it’s going to set up where the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes from there. Also, this multiverse expansion could be the way how Marvel introduces their new lineup with Deadpool, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

This trailer has given fans excitement on what’s to come. Tom Holland even said that the teaser trailer is only the tip of the iceberg. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the movie that will answer how Sony and Marvel will continue branching with their respective multiverses.

Catch the movie in theaters on December 17, 2021.
