Protecting Your Skin From the Sun This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

A true Miamian appreciates a good day at the beach. Clear skies, fresh air and of course the hot Miami sun. As someone who experiences the worst type of sunburns and peeling, I know the importance of protecting your skin even when you’re out on Ocean & 7TH and it seems like the most un-cool thing to do. Your 20’s are your prime, and the years everyone says you’ll never get back are the most crucial when it comes to skin protection. The skin ages more rapidly when exposed to too much sun. The sun can make the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots on your skin when exposed for too long.

Along with the fact that the sun causes you to age prematurely, the more threatening effect of not protecting your skin is that skin cancer becomes a concern and has a greater chance of generating. Although it is unrealistic to think that we, young adults would stay out of the sun during its peak time (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) we should try our best to lather up on the sunscreen and remember to reapply throughout the day. Another key fact to being protected from the sun is definitely to apply 30 minutes before you go out to the sun and then reapplying especially if you’ve been in the water or playing sports on the sand.

The American Academy of Dermatology advices that all sunscreen buyers invest in a sunblock that is SPF30 Or an SPF50 depending on your sun exposure. Fun Fact: The number simply means how much longer you have in the sun before you burn rather than not applying anything at all. If you’re wearing SPF30 make sure to apply every 30 minutes and if you’re wearing SPF50, check in every 50 minutes.

If you’re still considering going out in the sun without the hassle of sunscreen keep this in mind. A person has double the risk of getting skin cancer if they’ve had over 5 sunburns in their lifetime.

Have fun and keep your skin safe this summer!
