My Boyfriend is Obsessed with Video Games

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

We’ve all been there. The launch of Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption 2 has every girlfriend on the planet biting their nails and plotting how to destroy their boyfriend’s game console. We all see the typical Tumblr and instagram pictures of couple’s happily playing together a game of Mario Kart or sometimes even Black Ops, but recently we are aware that as soon as they put on their huge headphones (mic set included) and scoot their chair closer to the TV, the fun and games are definitely over.

For many of us, we wish they got bored of the game easily. The bad part? Even if they did get bored, five days later the new version of Fornite comes out and all of his “boys” are hitting him to see where they are landing next. The cycle continues as more and more video games release.

It may sound dramatic to some, but when you constantly hear high-pitched screams, you too would start to wonder why these things were invented.

Albeit few, here are some things that have worked out for me in when dealing with a videogame-loving boyfriend:

1. It helps if you already have something planned, or you reserve some time to spend together. Do not wait until he’s chilling in bed with his control in hand to ask him to take you out somewhere. That is simply unfair to him, as for many, their video game time is when they get to relax and talk to friends.

2. Make fun of him and distract him. This is to be done with caution, if you do it too often — he might hate you, but if he dies once or twice because of you being needy he’ll probably laugh and give you a sweet kiss at least.

3. The most fun and best way for me is to actually join him. It might be a little hard to understand and play, and you probably will never be as skilled as that soldier that keeps killing you, but at least you’re trying to spend time with him and understand something he likes to do for fun. Take turns on Fortnite and see if you may be lucky enough to kill someone. Make quality time for things you both like, even if it includes playing Call of Duty everyone once in a while.
