To many of us R. Kelly was only an R&B singer we all jammed out to when his song “Ignition” came on. But now he’s one of the most talked about celebs but not on a light note—he’s been accused of sexual abuse for over two decades. If this has been going on for so long why is he still trending?

The most shocking news to many has been the docu-series that aired recently named “Surviving R Kelly”. In the docu-series many women have come out accusing R. Kelly of pedophilia, abuse, etc. putting a bigger spotlight on his allegations.

Since the docu-series aired the hashtag #MuteRKelly has reached all social media platforms. This campaign led artists, music streaming platforms, and music venues to cut ties with him. Some artists have even publicly apologized for collaborating with the artist.

One of the most shocking apologies was from his daughter. Buku Abi, apologized in a lengthy Instagram post stating:

“I do apologize if my silence to all that is happening comes off as careless.  That is my last intention. I pray for all the families & women who have been affected by my father’s actions. Trust, I have been deeply affected by all of this.”

She then goes on to say she has no relationship with her father and why she chose not to speak on him.

“Anyone that knows me personally or has been following me throughout the years knows that I do not have a relationship with my father. Nor do I speak on him or on his behalf. I also am not fond of dealing with my personal issues or personal life through social media but, I feel things are starting to get out of hand. The same monster you all confronting me about is my father. I am well aware of who and what he is.  I grew up in that house. My choice to not speak on him and what he does is for my peace of mind. My emotional state. And for MY healing. I have to do & move in a manner that is best for me. I pray anyone who reads this understands I put nothing but good intent behind each word.”

For the first time, many people from his inner circle are coming forward with statements against the artist. But R. Kelly has still denied all accusations despite all the evidence coming forward. Will the movement and accusation lead to new evidence and justice? Stay tuned.
