The Golden Globes are now past us, spotlighting the movies of 2023. So what’s next? We, of course, had the new Mean Girls movie on January 12th, but that can’t be the only movie of 2024, can it? It most certainly isn’t.
I would be doing an injustice if I didn’t bring up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel has a huge year coming up (when does it not?). Deadpool 3 is currently filming, and production is well underway for the next installment of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse– but this isn’t the only Spider-Man movie on this list. Madame Web will be released on February 14, with big stars like Sydney Sweeney, Dakota Johnson, Emma Roberts, and many more. Also, a famous Spider-Man villain is getting another movie; Venom 3 will be coming out in November.
Unlike Marvel, DC has an uneventful year coming up. The only movie confirmed to be coming out in 2024 is Joker: Folie à Deux. This sequel follows Joker (2019) and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Who else is ready to see Lady Gaga in another action movie? This is the only confirmed movie from DC for 2024. DC is mainly looking ahead to 2025 to release new movies surrounding Batman, Superman, Deadshot, and many more. Lego Batman 2 has also been announced.
We’ve touched on Marvel and DC, but what about Disney? The trailer for Inside Out 2 dropped at the end of 2023 and the movie will soon be coming to theaters. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will come out, as well as Alien: Romulus, a new installment in the Alien franchise. Disney will close out the year with Mufasa: The Lion King. National Treasure 3 has also been announced.
But what about the live-action Snow White? That was delayed and will now be the first movie that Disney releases in 2025. Currently filming is a Lilo and Stitch live action, which is most likely going to be released in 2025.
Other movies are coming from other big studios besides Disney and DC, and a lot of them are new installments in major franchises. The most anticipated one is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This movie will follow up on the mysteries of Skull Island and the origins of the two titular characters. It’s currently in postproduction. Additionally, the 1996 movie Twister is going to be getting an update in 2024. Paul Rudd and McKenna Grace are listed to star in the upcoming Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and a new Lord of the Rings movie set 183 years before the original movies, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is set to come out in December. A sequel that history buffs are going to love is Gladiator 2, featuring Remember the Titans star, Denzel Washington.
This next one fans might not know: A Quite Place is getting a prequel. It’s called A Quite Place: Day One. Not many stars from the original two are in this spinoff, and the plot hasn’t been released, but the movie is in the post-production stage.
Now, every girl’s favorite heartthrob is coming back to our screens in Dune: Part Two. That’s right, we will be seeing Timothée Chalamet alongside Austin Butler, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Barry Keoghan in what will most likely be the movie of the year. Isn’t this a stacked cast?
For fans of the Garfield comics, The Garfield Movie, which features a baby Garfield, is coming out in May.
Universal Pictures’s Despicable Me 4 is currently in production. Additionally, Kung Fu Panda 4 is coming in 2024. This animated comedy is in post-production and stars Jack Black.
Currently, filming is Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with a release set for this December. Did anyone know there was a Sonic the Hedgehog 2? Because I didn’t.
Some children’s movies are coming out in 2024. Harold and The Purple Crayon has been completed, and Sesame Street also has a film coming up.
2024 could be the year of musicals. Many musicals are coming to theaters, the most well known being Wicked: Part One, which has completed filming and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. This next one isn’t a musical, but musical fans will still love it; Beetlejuice 2 is a follow-up to the 1988 movie, starring Jenna Ortega and, of course, Winona Ryder.
