Montana MacRae: Smart, Driven, and Dedicated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.
I’m sure many of us have seen posters for Smart Girls, have seen it come up on our Facebook newsfeed, or have even seen them tabling in GC. Along with myself, i’m also sure that some weren’t aware that this group was dedicated towards! Well, this week’s Campus Celebrity, Montana MacRae is the face behind the establishment of a Smart Girls chapter here at FIU. I had the honor of interviewing this sweet girl, and was able to learn  some facts about her and her dedication to our University!

Age: 19
Major: Political Science with a Pre-Law focus

Year: Sophomore

What led you to choose your major?

I have loved politics since I was young, during dinner we would watch the news and I would always find something to debate with my parents. I want to change the world, make an impact on someone’s life and I know my childhood was less than ideal so the best way I feel I can impact someone is by helping them raise themselves to be a better citizen with more opportunities.

What are some of your involvements on campus?

I am quite involved on campus. I am Founder and President of Smart Girls Group at FIU. I also work at the Women’s Center and through them I have been privileged to sit on three different committees: the Women Who Lead Conference planning committee, Take Back the Night planning committee, and “Carry That Weight” solidarity event planning committee. I also serve on the Student Conduct Committee along with being a member of the Honors College. I also have two online internships.

Why did you decided to establish a Smart Girls chapter here at FIU?

I knew, when I was applying to colleges, that wherever I went to college I wanted to establish a Smart Girls Group campus chapter because it had such a positive affect on all aspects of my life that I knew it was something worth sharing with other girls my age who were facing the same challenges that I am.

How was your experience at the headquarters?

My experience with headquarters has been nothing less than spectacular. I have been working with this organization, as a whole, for just over two years and from the day I told them I wanted to start a campus chapter, they have helped me the best they could. I have run ideas past them and they have seen our entire plan and they have taken those plans and have began implemented them with their other campus chapters.

What do you hope Smart Girls bring to FIU?

I hope Smart Girls Group at FIU brings a unique sisterhood. We are focused on bringing together girls who want to change the community around them or even the world we live in with our levels of philanthropy, or gaining more knowledge on how to handle the work force with resume building workshops and networking and interviewing practice. At the end of the day, we are all Smart Girls, trying to just better ourselves, FIU, and the world while dreaming our dreams and working to achieve our goals.

What has been the most memorable experience so far?

The most memorable experience was our first general member meeting. The feeling I had when I saw the room full of girls excited to know more about what we are and those eager to join our philanthropy groups was the most rewarding feeling in the world.
