Mean Girls Reunion Encourages Voting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

The year 2020 has been a year like no other. While it has been vital to staying up-to-date with the news, all the devastating headlines with the troubling realities of quarantine can take a toll on anyone. To keep ourselves occupied, many are revisiting their favorite movies and TV shows. In a surprising twist, many of those movies and TV shows have come together for virtual reunions. From “The Office” to “Parks and Recreation”“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, and “The Lord of the Rings”, fans of all sorts are getting the content they’ve been longing for.

However, nothing could be more iconic than the cast of “Mean Girls” virtually reuniting 16 years later to encourage voting in the upcoming presidential election. The reunion was only possible after Tina Fey promised to bring the cast together if 5,000 people went to the non-profit organization HeadCount to register to vote or contribute to any other voting action. On October 3, as known as “Mean Girls Day,” the reunion was moderated by Katie Couric and released via her Instagram.

During the gathering, Tina Fey teased the upcoming movie adaption of the “Mean Girls” Broadway musical. Fey also mentioned that fans have the opportunity to see their name featured in the movie’s “burn book” by submitting their dream cast for the film through the Mean Girls Broadway website

Members of the cast reminisced about their experiences working on the film and the impact of their characters. Initially, Lindsey Lohan (Cady Heron) wanted to play the role of Regina George. However, after reading the script, Lohan felt a kinship with her character and related to the feeling of trying to fit in high school: as I imagine many viewers also felt. Daniel Franzese (Damian) spoke about the importance of what his character represented for himself and others watching who saw themselves as Damian. Rajiv Surendra (Kevin Gnapoor) talked about how shocking it was for him to read the script and see for the first time an Indian character who was a mathlete, but didn’t lean towards any Indian stereotypes.

This was not all, however. On October 9, Lindsey Lohan shared an unreleased clip from the virtual get-together where she, Rachel McAdams (Regina George), Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), and Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) recreated their famous four-way call. You can find it on Lohan’s Instagram.

The cast of “Mean Girls” encourages everyone to vote and was the driving force of their reunion. For once listen to the Plastics because voting is totally fetch!
