Instagram’s New Policy On Age Restricted Posts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Instagram has begun the initiative of restricting certain weight loss and cosmetic surgery posts for users under the age of 18.

The social media platform allows the world to connect across the globe. However, it has allowed users to create a highlight reel of their best moments causing a pressure to have a picture-perfect life and in this case body. Studies show that young girls who engage in social media platforms are more concerned with body image.

Several celebrities and social media influencers promote weight loss products or cosmetic procedures on their Instagrams as sponsored posts. From detox teas to the most popular Flattummyco products, these celebrities advertise the image of achieving a perfect body through their meal replacement shakes or weight loss lollipops.

The implementation of the age policy is the first step in creating a positive space online. Anyone who is listed on Instagram under the age of 18 will not be exposed to these sponsored posts.

In testing out the new policy, I went on my different Instagram accounts and tried the different options. On my first account I pressed the option labeled “Under 18” and the post did not show. Meanwhile, on my second account, I pressed the option labeled “18 or Over” and the post appeared.

While these restrictions are a step in the right direction, there are still kinks that need to be worked out. If a user under 18 chooses the “18 or Over” option they will be exposed to the posts regardless. However, this is just the beginning and will continue to receive attention.
