How Technology is Affecting the New Generation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

In today’s society, technology rules almost every aspect of our lives: our cell phones, televisions, radios, or even smart doorbells. However, is this a luxury or a curse?

To start off, the youngest generation at the moment is Generation Z which is anyone born from 1997-2012. The generation mentioned has become digital natives. As a result, using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Tumblr has affected their self-identity, confidence, mental health, habits.

In terms of self-identity, seeing more content uploaded about the LQBTQ+ community and being comfortable about their self-image has encouraged Gen Z to be more comfortable. Kids as young as 12 years old are more willing to talk about their sexuality and self-image. This leads to having a more confidence generation.

However, there are several famous influencers on these social media platforms that praise unrealistic body proportions to young viewers, causing them to believe they need to look a certain way in order to be “attractive.” Unfortunately, teenagers don’t understand that most bodies don’t look like the ones marketed.

On the other hand, technology has also become a tool in someone’s everyday life. For instance, the Nest doorbell has helped people protect their homes by being able to monitor who comes in and out of their home with the camera attached to the doorbell.

Moreover, Google has also innovated people’s homes through their Google Home application which allows people to connect several devices in their house: devices like the Nest Doorbell,  the Google Lighting, etc.. Creating this application has made people more comfortable in regulating their homes and has left people dependent on their cellphones.

Overall, technology has affected the world specifically with mental health, self-identity, and habits.
