Dwayne Wade & Gabrielle Union Welcome Baby Girl Via Surrogate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

On Nov. 7th, Basketball star Dwayne Wade reportedly opted out of playing with his team the Miami Heat against the San Antonio Spurs making it the first game he would have missed during his final dance. The following day, The couple shared via their Instagram accounts that they had welcomed a baby girl via surrogate.

Before marrying Dwayne Wade in 2014, Gabrielle Union knew from the start that she would never want to have kids. Soon after, she tied the knot and became stepmother to Wade’s three children, two from previous relationships and his nephew. After becoming a stepmom, her desire to have children blossomed. Unfortunately, what she didn’t know was that she was victim of adenomyosis, a form of endometriosis but her diagnosis did not come till after years of many unsuccessful fertility treatments.

In her 2017 memoir, she revealed that her body had been prisoner of multiple IVF cycles which led to about 8 or 9 miscarriages. On an episode of Dr. Oz she spoke out about her frustrations stating “There’s so much shame and mystery and guilt that surrounds fertility issues and that’s why I wanted to include it in my book because I’m tired of it.” Despite all of this, The couple stayed strong and continued fighting for their miracle baby.

The Miami Heat couldn’t contain their joy in sharing the news and welcoming the new addition to the Heat family. They definitely made it known that the newborn would be reppin the team who brings the flame.

Welcome to the world Kaavia James Union Wade!
