College Student Expelled for Hate Crime

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Brianna Brochu, an 18 year old student at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, is facing criminal charges for trying to poison her roommate in order to get rid of her. Not only did she do disgusting things to get her roommate to leave, but she also took it to Instagram to celebrate her “accomplishment” and listed in full detail some of the atrocities she did to make this happen:

The roommate and victim, Chennel Rowe, also took the case to social media, after learning that Brochu had done all of this things, and filmed a Facebook live video that by now has been streamed everywhere. In the video she reports feeling sick a month or so after moving in to her old room. She stated she finally made the decision to move out a few weeks back before even knowing that Brochu was trying to poison her because she “felt unwanted in her own room” and also disclosed in her video that her former roommate would bully her and mock her while recording her doing everyday things as well.

After Rowe saw the Instagram posts that revealed all of Brochu’s efforts, she informed the university officials immediately. Rowe also reports that the university was taking its time with the investigation instead of addressing the issue immediately: “The fact that I’m black and my old roommate was white … If the roles was switched, I want to know if it would be handled the same way,” she said in her video. This brings up a deeper issue of racism on the university’s campus that needs to be addressed with more diligence, after all this is a crime of hate and most likely has to do with Rowe’s race since Brochu referred to her sarcastically as a “Jamaican Barbie” in her Instagram post.

Brochu was expelled from the university and turned herself in to the West Hartford Police Department over the weekend after she was charged with criminal mischief and second-degree breach of peace. There are some allegations that say she might also be charged with intimidation charges, but the police hasn’t made an official report to the news about the specific charges. The President of the University of Hartford, Greg Woodward, released a statement to the university’s community reassuring that they took immediate action on the “deeply disturbing” incident.
