As you walk through GC this week, heart cut-outs decorate the information desk, red and pink decorations adorn the many tables and happy couples stroll hand in hand past the pit or sit for a romantic lunch at “Pollo” or Chilis. If you can’t tell already, it’s that time of year again… Valentine’s Day! To some, this day is filled with lots of cute texts, boxes of chocolates and a romantic date at a fancy restaurant with a stroll along the beach and a kiss to end the night. For others, the single ladies, Valentine’s Day can be somewhat dreadful; some even consider it, “the most hated day of the year”. But, never fear, this year your Valentine’s Day won’t be spent wishing you were at dinner with your significant other! Instead, we’ve provided you with four ideas for a “single ladies” Valentine’s Day!
1. Spend the night watching movies that celebrate friendship instead of romance:
Your friends are the ones who help you get through long study nights in GL or difficult times with family or guys, so what better way is there to celebrate! Movies like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Clueless, Beaches, and Bridesmaids are perfect movies for this kind of night.
2. Make a difference….
and spend your Valentine’s Day in the service of others. Sometimes the best way to get yourself out of a funk is to lend out a helping hand. Volunteer at the local hospital, soup kitchen, homeless shelter or anywhere else you can find! Some great places to volunteer are Miami Children’s Hospital, Baptist Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House, Camillus House and His House Orphanage. Through service you will be reminded of all you have to be grateful for.
3. Relax and focus on YOU!
Instead of going out to a packed restaurant, fill your tub with water and bubbles, grab a good book and sit back and relax. Sometimes in the craziness of school, parties and work we forget to take a step back and enjoy doing nothing. So take advantage of Valentine’s Day and celebrate YOU!
4. Throw an anti-Valentine’s Day party!
Invite all of your single friends to enjoy good food, drinks and music and tell them to wear all black. Play a few board games or just sit and chat! There’s nothing better than spending Valentine’s Day with all your single friends. You wouldn’t have to worry about being a “third wheel” or spend your night watching happy couples holding hands. One tip for the night is to make sure to have a heart shaped piñata like the one in the movie Valentine’s Day. Have everyone participate in hitting it. This will give everyone the opportunity to release all their Valentine’s Day anger!
With these fun, single friendly, Valentine’s Day ideas, it’s guaranteed you’ll have a great time! Just remember to stay positive and enjoy all the little things in life. Being single gives you freedom and a chance to focus on YOU, so make sure to keep that in mind when February 14th rolls around. If you’re single on Valentine’s Day, don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it!
