As wild fires spread throughout the state of California the death toll increases with the number already at 36 killed as of last Sunday; many worry that because of the speed the fires are spreading at, the amount of deaths reported will continue. These fires have caused thousands to evacuate their homes and businesses, such as the evacuations in Northern California that have been ordered. As a result of the fires, the San Francisco Bay Area now contains unsafe air quality. Furthermore, over 200,000 acres in California have been destroyed leaving many without homes.

According to officials, the cause of the fires have not been identified but some believe that it was a result of strong winds (also the reason for the speed at which they’re spreading).  Others believe the fires were started by power-lines that were struck down by the same strong winds. However, because of the high levels of damage, the evidence that would usually be used to determine the cause is no longer accessible. This has made it much more difficult for investigators. According to CNN, “More than 9,000 firefighters are battling the remaining 17 wildfires, but more manpower and equipment brought into the state is allowing workers to begin picking through the rubble and ash.”
