December is finally here and we all know what that means… lots of holiday sweets, time with the family and endless holiday parties and potlucks! But it’s also the time of year for kisses under the mistletoe, cuddling by the fire and heartwarming gift exchanges. For couples, this time of year truly is “the most wonderful time of the year”. But for singles, the holidays can be a little annoying with all the couple “cheer” going around. It can sometimes make the single ladies feel like Mr. Scrooge himself, especially when you’re crazy aunt or “abuela” asks you the same question at every family party, “no boyfriend for the holidays?” But believe it or not, there are actually a few perks to being single during the holiday season. Here are five reasons being single may not be so bad after all!

  1. You don’t have to worry about buying a gift

Buying a gift for your significant other can be quite the challenge. As you scour the mall for the perfect gift day after day it can get exhausting and stressful, especially, as the days near closer and closer to the day of the gift exchange. Not to mention gifts can also get very pricey! When you’re single, no need for this stress, just sit back and watch all your non single friends scramble for the perfect gift!

  1. No awkward “meet the family”

Meeting the family can be a very awkward experience, especially during the holiday season when family dinners and parties turn from meeting mom and dad to meeting third cousins and great aunts! Imagine avoiding something like the scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, where Ian meets Toula’s family! Thank goodness for being single!

  1. You’ll have time to reconnect with old friends

Since you won’t be tied down in a relationship during your holiday break, you’ll have plenty of time to reconnect with old friends. You can enjoy a girl’s night, cuddled up in you favorite onesie, watching you’re favorite movie or Boy Meets World  re-runs! No need to worry about a significant other wanting to hang out with you!

  1. No faking it!

As bad as this sounds, we all know our significant others might not exactly be the best “gift givers”. But of course, it’s the thought that counts and pretending to like a gift is something we are all guilty of! You don’t want to hurt your significant other’s feelings, so pretending to like their gift is tough and stressful! Luckily, if you’re single, you won’t have this problem!

  1. Freedom

Winter break is the perfect time to put your energy into doing things YOU want to do! In between studying and extracurriculars, it’s hard to find time for yourself during the semester. Being single during the holidays, you will have the freedom to do whatever you want. You can bake Christmas treats, go out all night long, enjoy a cup of hot coco or eggnog with a good book or just simply relax. And Most importantly, freedom means you have no worries… no one needs to know who you decide to kiss under the mistletoe!
