3 Women in Hollywood That Advocate for Women’s Rights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

In a world where our attentions are captured by celebrities, social media, and Hollywood, we may at times find it easy to forget about important issues and topics occurring around the world. Women’s rights, in particular, can often be forgotten in the wake of so much turmoil in the news and changing social patterns.

For the celebrities outlined here, however, they balance a healthy relationship between advocacy efforts and their jobs as actors, models, and media personalities.

Here are 3 extraordinary individuals in Hollywood that do not cease to act on behalf of women around the world:

Emma Watson

Emma is a continued advocate for gender equality; specifically, she was selected as the Goodwill ambassador for the United Nations entity for the empowerment of women across the globe.

She has worked on promoting the HeForShe campaign, in which she encouraged individuals around the world to make gender equality a priority in their everyday lives. She believes that men should also advocate on behalf of the rights of women.

Emma has made it clear through her actions that she believes in empowering female youth and promoting equality within female dominated spaces.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina began her advocacy with the United Nations in 2001, when she was stationed among various camps in poor, developing countries.

In 2012, Angelina organized the Preventing Sexual Violence initiative with the previous British foreign secretary- William Hague- which helped establish the first international protocol on documenting, investigating, and combating sexual violence.

This initiative was adopted by 156 countries.

Angelina has since stated that she is working with NATO to change military regulations to prioritize ending sexual violence and expand peacekeeping forces to women.

Amal Clooney

While some know her as the wife of George Clooney, Amal retains her own success as an international human rights lawyer that advocates on behalf of women.

Apart from her advocacy and legal efforts on addressing human rights violations, Amal continues to fight for women’s rights through the Amal Clooney Scholarship, where Lebanon female students are granted a scholarship to support their education.

She has also lectured as a visiting professor at various reputable institutions.
