Need a Break From the City? Spend the Day in Katonah, New York

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIT chapter.

New York City is great, but let’s be honest: there’s something special about fall in a small suburban town. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like they’re in Gilmore Girls? If you’re missing that Stars Hollow energy, Katonah, New York is the perfect day trip for you. Just hop on the Metro-North for a little over an hour and get ready to pretend that you’re Lorelai Gilmore.

Start the day with brunch at Jay Street Cafe. Relatively new to the town, Jay Street has quickly become a favorite. The menu has something for everyone (including great coffee) and the adorable interior makes it a must-visit spot.

Next, take a stroll around the town. The main street, Katonah Avenue, is filled with cafes, boutiques, and markets. Stop into the Community Shop for some thrifting or Ebba for some handmade jewelry.

You want more coffee by now, right? Head over to the Katonah Reading Room. This town favorite serves coffee, tea, baked goods, and other grab-and-go food. While you wait for your drink, look at their books and see if anything piques your interest.

Once you’re fully caffeinated, go visit the animals at Muscoot Farm. Open every day from 10-4 with free admission, the 777 acres of land are filled with things to do. Go see the animals and hike the trails. If you’re there on a Sunday, you can even take a hayride and browse around the farmer’s market.

Next, head over to the Katonah Art Museum. Check out the current exhibit, Arrivals, and explore the beautiful gardens in the back.

There are a variety of options when you get hungry for dinner. If you’re looking for something quick, grab a slice of pizza at Pizza Station or La Famiglia. Looking for sit down? There are plenty of restaurants like The Whitlock, Blue Dolphin, Farmhouse Tavern, and Tengda
