Carrie Bradshaw is known for her writing. In Sex and The City she is always seen typing away on her laptop, but in The Carrie Diaries young Carrie is often seen writing in her journal. One thing my closest friends all know about me is that I’m obsessed with journaling. I personally believe that everyone should write in a journal – I even convinced my roommate to write in one occasionally. Having an outlet to get your thoughts out on paper can be so therapeutic or can act as almost a time capsule to capture certain stages in your life.
I am currently writing in my fourteenth full journal. Fourteenth. I started writing in one on and off in about fourth grade and started writing religiously in sixth grade. My journal entries are nothing crazy, I just write about what I did that day, but I love the fact that I have physical, written records of the last seven years of my life on paper. From seeing my handwriting change to seeing how my day-to-day life has evolved, it is so interesting to be able to look back and compare then and now. Even my children and grandchildren will be able to look back years from now and see how different the world was, and I think that’s pretty amazing.
Journaling can also be an amazing way to de-stress. If you have a lot on your mind or something is bothering you, try taking a few minutes to get it all out on paper. I have a separate journal I only write in about negative things because I like to have them separate from my daily life so I’m not tempted to go back and reread them. I know I always feel so much better when I write it all down then close the journal and put it away. Once it’s on the paper, it’s out of mind and I can stop worrying about it.
If you’re super nostalgic like me or are just looking for a way to unwind and reflect at the end of the day, put a pen to paper and see what comes out. You might be on your way to fourteen full journals before you know it.
