Top 5 Super Foods

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Falmouth chapter.

These foods are believed to be the best natural way of reducing illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, and the best thing is, they are all available at your local supermarket!

1) Blueberries

A reason why blueberries are a super food is because of the antioxidants they contain. These help combat against various cancers, heart disease, cataracts, and age-related neurological illnesses. As well as containing age-defying antioxidants, they are also a good source of fibre – helping the gut. An additional perk of consuming blueberries is that they help keep your skin looking younger for longer since they help the body make collagen.

2) Broccoli

Broccoli is not everyone’s favourite, but it is filled with essential vitamins including beta-carotene, fibre, magnesium and folic acid. It is known to fight against depression, improve bone strength and improve digestion. Most recently it has been discovered that broccoli contains ‘isothiocyanates’ – a biochemical which inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

3) Oats

Eating oats everyday as part of a balanced diet is ideal because it is very high in fibre and helps those who are diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), where the gut is irritated by substances such as dairy, etc. Oats lower cholesterol so it will reduce your risk of having heart disease. This tastes lovely with a small squeeze of honey.

4) Soy

Soy beans are highly recommended for a few reasons: they are packed with protein, fibre and omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Soy beans are also low in saturated fats and are the only plant-based protein with all the essential amino acids. They too have antioxidant properties.

5) Walnuts

These particular nuts are the best for your health, because they contain a high level of antioxidants – much healthier than pistachios, peanuts and almonds. Eating them raw is most recommended.
