The Seven Olympic Athletes Heating Up Sochi

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

The most anticipated event of the winter is fast approaching and we know collegiettes can’t wait for all the fun surrounding the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia this February. The Olympics begin February 7 and run until the 23rd and will encompass 98 events in fifteen different sports in it’s sixteen day run. While we know how exciting the actual games may be we understand that another reason collegiettes love the Olympics is all of the gorgeous athletes that will be participating in them.

These good-looking winter athletes have been training for fours years, preparing for Sochi, getting their bodies in top physical shape (lucky us!). Sadly for us collegiettes, these men will not be sporting speedos, but a little imagination goes a long way right?

Here are the handsome men that will be heating up Sochi:

1) Cam Fowler, USA Ice hockey

This gorgeous 22-year-old was born in Windsor, Canada, but moved to Michigan by the age of two. In high school, Cam played ice hockey as well as basketball and baseball. However, Fowler always knew he wanted to pursue a career in hockey, which he made happen at the age of 18 when the Anaheim Ducks picked him in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, for whom he still plays today.

Fun Fact: He is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada.

2) Tim Burke, USA Biathlon

The 31-year-old from Paul Smiths, New York started participating in biathlons at the age of 13 and has been competing ever since. Along with his killer looks, this will be Burke’s third Winter Olympics, and I cannot wait to see what he brings to Sochi.

Fun Fact: His favorite kind of food is Mexican.

3) Henrik Lundqvist, Sweden Ice Hockey

Lundqvist, a Swedish native, is the goalie for the New York Rangers but will be competing for his home country this winter. When Henrik isn’t playing hockey, you can find him spending time with his wife, Therese and his daughter, Charlise or working with the Garden of Dreams foundation that helps children with impairments have unforgettable experiences. Dreamy eyes, a sexy accent, talented hockey player and devoted family man with a kid charitable heart–need I say more?

Fun Fact: He has a twin brother, Joel, who also plays hockey! (Double the eye candy)

4) Jonathan Toews, Canada Ice Hockey

Oh, Canada! Thank you for choosing Toews to play for your team. I have always been an ice hockey fan, but Toews is just another reason for me to watch. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, this 25-year-old has accrued many honors in his professional career. At the age of 22, Toews became the youngest player to join the “Triple Gold Club”, winning a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal and a World Championship. In addition, he is the youngest captain that his team, the Chicago Blackhawks, has ever had. In adition this will be his second Winter Olympics on behalf of team Canada. Last Olympics, Canada’s hocket team brought home gold from Vancouver, so let’s tune in to see how they do this time!

Fun Fact: There is a lake in his hometown province in Canada named after him.

5) Nick Goepper, USA Freestyle Skiing

This adorable 20-year-old is heading to Sochi for his first Winter Olympics! An Indiana native, Goepper has been skiing since the age of 5, and at age 13 even built a park in his own backyard (What a determined kid!). Growing up Goepper also sold candy and mowed lawns to pay for his ski passes but it appears that all his hard work paid off! So far in his carreer Goepper has won a gold medal at the 2013 X Games Aspen, a silver medal in the 2013 World Championships and first place at the 2012-2013 AFP World ranking in slopestyle (just to name a few of his accomplishments). He said that if he wins a medal in Sochi, he would keep it on a stuffed animal in his room in Indiana… how adorable!

Fun fact: He wears the same pair of Superman underwear on every day of a contest.

6) Shani Davis, USA Speed Skating

Davis is the first black athlete, from any nation, to win an individual gold medal at the

Winter Olympics. The 31-year-old will be heading to the Olympics for his third time competing in speed skating, which he began at age six. When he was younger, his friends made fun of him for skating, but who has the last laugh now?

Fun fact: His sporting motto is “Believe in yourself and don’t take any day for granted.”

7) Shaun White, USA Snowboarding

There is no need to introduce this famous Olympian, since he is the most recognizable face in snowboarding. Many know him for his signature curly red locks, but recently he has been rocking a clean-cut hairstyle, for which I am giving him a gold medal! Shaun already has two gold medals from the Winter Olympics in Turin and Vancouver, so maybe Sochi will bring him his third (Third time’s a charm, right Shaun?).  I hope so!

Fun Fact: His nickname is “The Flying Tomato.”
