Networking Over the Summer: How to Get Started

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Summer is a time to relax, have fun, and make some money. While doing all of this, it is still possible and worthwhile to do a few things that will help you get ahead in the business and academic world.

Research Position: One great way to network this summer is by getting a research position. By working closely with a professor and fellow students, you are making great connections. The professor you work with will be able to write you a letter of recommendation and point you towards people they know in your field. The students you work with will also be able to put in good words for you and help you know more people in your field. Also, research looks fantastic on a résumé.

Get a Job: A job at a place where you can talk to people who have established careers is super helpful. You will have the opportunity to talk to people who may want to give you advice, a recommendation, or tell you about an internship/job opportunity. Look for jobs at country clubs, golf courses, nannying, and waitressing at high end restaurants. These jobs are an especially good idea if you are naturally very outgoing.

Internship: It is a bit late to be looking for a summer internship right now, as most companies have already chosen their interns for the upcoming summer. However, if you have an internship, the best thing that you can do for yourself is do a really good job and make a good impression. Dress super professionally (even if it is more dressy than everyone else in the office), make sure your hair and nails are done neatly, and cover any tattoos and non-ear piercings. Be sure to not slack off, exceed the bare minimum requirements, and be eager to give a helping hand where needed.

Hope you have a fun and productive summer!
