Motivational Monday: Advice from Marilyn

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” – Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was more intelligent than she was given credit for. Despite her ‘dumb blonde’ or ‘sex-symbol’ labels, her understanding of the world around her was astounding, accurate, and timeless.

Imperfections are beautiful. Being different from what society dictates as attractive does not mean that you are ugly or unappealing. Your so-called ‘imperfections’ are what make you different from everybody else in the world, and in many cases these ‘imperfections’ are the physical or emotional characteristics that friends, family, and strangers find most endearing about you. A funny laugh, dimples, or a beauty mark makes you who you are, but it does not define you. They are the charming attributes that inspire love and affection. So love yourself from your constantly messy hair to your uneven toes, because they make you you and there is nothing more beautiful than that.

Madness is genius. Nobody would have achieved anything in this life if they didn’t dare to go beyond what others thought to be normal or sane. If Howard Schultz didn’t stand by his coffee house idea, despite being told over and over it would never succeed there would be no Starbucks. If J.K. Rowling was not crazy enough to continuously send her insane story about magic from publisher to publisher for years, despite being told no, no one would ever buy her book there would be no Harry Potter. And hey, if Benjamin Franklin wasn’t mad enough to fly a kite with a key outside in a thunder and lightening storm there would be no electricity! So believe in yourself and your own ideas, no matter how eccentric or unconventional they may be. Life would be boring if everything was ordinary, so have the courage to be extraordinary.

Finally, it is better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring. Enjoy your life. Have fun, joke around, and don’t take things too seriously. You only have so many breaths to take in this life so make them count. Live life to the fullest, and if you get ridiculed for being silly while you are having the time of your life naysayers naysay, because they don’t know what they are missing out on. Go out on Thursday nights, laugh in the movie theatre during scary movies, sing in the shower, and ride the stag statue! Who cares what anybody else thinks, laugh and the world will laugh with you.
