London Calling: Audriana’s Guide to Love Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

We all do it; daydream about meeting our soul mate in the most romantic way we can ever imagine. When it comes to studying abroad you cannot help but to wonder if your future husband is walking the streets of Europe. It is hard not to quickly fall in love with all of the British accents and the charm of the men in London. Although the accents might sweep you off your feet you still have to be cautious with dating abroad. That does not mean you cannot have fun but being safe is key. As a single collegiette dating in London, I have learned many lessons so far on how to balance a fun love life while also making sure to not let a guy take over your time abroad.

Flirt and have an outgoing personality.  While abroad you have to remember to be yourself and not be intimidated by anyone. You’re only here once so why not make it the best time of your college career! Just by having an outgoing personality will attract a guys attention. The Brits love American girls so if they see you laughing and having a good time they will easily come over to talk. Don’t be afraid to even make the first move. Make good judgments and if you think they’re worth it, go for it!

Go on a date if he asks you out. What I love about the British guys is that they are not afraid to take you out. Just make sure that you let your friends know exactly where you will be and what time to expect you home. I was lucky and my friends got to know my date before I went out with him for the night so I felt safer. My first date out in London felt like it came straight out of a romantic movie. Who wouldn’t love a walk along the Thames River with Big Ben at night?

Date around. Although you might be into one of the guys you been dating does not mean you cannot see other guys. Keep your options open and feel free to meet other guys. If a date comes along with it don’t feel guilty to accept the offer. It is very different than in the US. Here, I get to have a great time and meet guys that could potentially be in my future and I have a lot of control in the situation.

Have a night out with him and his friends. One on one time is great with your date but the best way to get to know him is hanging out with his ‘mates’. One of the most fun nights out in London was when I brought my American girlfriends out with me to meet up with a few British guys. My friends were able to meet some new Brits and we all had a great time at a pub were all the “locals” go after work. It was great to actually feel like a true Londoner and to introduce everyone.

Do not be afraid to fall in love. Although it hasn’t happened for me yet, it is important to remember that falling in love while abroad could be a possibility. You can never plan your future entirely. Go with the flow and have a great time when meeting guys abroad. You never know whom you will connect with on a romantic level. Do not be afraid of love. If falling in love happens, don’t be afraid to talk to him about it! Everything will fall into place in the end.
