Between busy schedules and the loads of homework, getting the much needed “beauty rest” becomes very difficult in college. Nothing quite screams “college” like it being midnight when you’re 3 coffee cups deep writing a paper that’s due at that 8 a.m. So to avoid those dreaded dark circles under the eyes and that coffee crash, here are some helpful tips that every collegiette needs in order to get a good night’s sleep. Don’t let the bedbugs bite!
1. Get All Your Work Done Before HandIn college, there are a million and one things to do for class and at times it can be very overwhelming. It is difficult for anyone trying to go to sleep with the constant stress of all the work that has to be done hanging over his or her heads. So it is so important to get a planner and make sure there is enough time to get all the work done while getting that much needed sleep. Sleep is the number one thing every college student loves to do, so why not make time for it?
2. Turn Off Your Cell Phone and Other ElectronicsEvery colligette knows the struggle of trying to fall asleep while your phone is buzzing with text messages and you’re simultaneously trying to resist the urge to check Twitter for the thousandth time today. It is a tenuous task trying to get your body to relax with all of these technological distractions. The most efficient way to avoid this problem is by simply turning off your cellphone or putting it facedown on silent. Once the phone is put away, there will be nothing standing in your way between a perfect nights rest.
3. Drink TeaNothing quite gets the body to a nice tranquil state like a warm cup of tea. The key to a full night’s sleep is to get your body in a relaxing state allowing your body to unwind. However, be careful to only drink the tea 2 hours before you plan on actually going to sleep so you do not need to get up to go to the bathroom. The goal of drinking the tea is to get your body relaxed so try to drink it while reading a book or watching Netflix and you should get to sleep in no time- just make sure it’s decaf!
4. Make Your BedIt may sound unnecessary, but studies show that having your bed made before you go to sleep actually improves the nights rest. This is because when your bed is made you are actually more comfortable and comfort is the key solution to a great night sleep. Although we colligettes have a hundred things to do through out the day, it only takes 2 minutes to make your bed in the morning and it will pay off with that perfect nights sleep.
5. Avoid CaffeineEvery colligette runs on one thing…coffee. We drink it in the morning, the afternoon, and even the nighttime. Actually it is hard to imagine a time when that warm Starbucks coffee cup is not in our hands or on our desks. Although coffee solves 95% of problems every colligette faces, it does not help with trying to fall asleep. Coffee is loaded with caffeine, which keeps you awake so drinking it before bedtime is not the brightest idea. So as a supplement before bed maybe drink some nice hot tea instead!
