Collegiettes, in the midst of fashion week, which most will say is the height of fashion creativity, there has been yet another culturally insensitive fashion item. We’ve seen this before though, haven’t we? Just this time last year, H&M was getting heat for one of their items which displayed racism. Racist and culturally insensitive items are common in the fashion industry in companies such as H&M, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana. It is sad to say that now we can add Gucci to that list as well.
The sweater that is making headlines everywhere is listed on the Gucci website priced at $890. The sweater resembles blackface which caused quite the uproar from social media users. The sweater that was taken off the website soon after backlash is black with a pull-up neck that has a mouth cutout which is surrounded by giant red lips. Hashtags like #BoycottGucci started trending quickly. Gucci executives released an apology after the controversy and admitted that they were wrong and didn’t intend to offend anyone. They plan to take this step back as a learning experience to further their organization by increasing diversity within it.
