With the beginning of the fall season comes the most exciting time of the year in the eyes of us fashion-obsessed Collegiettes – Fall Fashion month! Beginning first in the fashion capital of America, fashion week makes a major impression on New York City. From graveyard shows to Rihanna’s epic embrace of womanhood, here are the major highlights from the NYFW Spring 2019 shows.
1. Ralph Lauren Debuts his 50th Anniversary Show
In honor of his 50-year anniversary, Ralph Lauren’s star-studded show, located at the stunning Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, was the place to be. Hilary Clinton, Blake Lively, Oprah and many other A-list celebs made an appearance at the runway show featuring an incredible 100+ looks. The show also stood as an ode to Ralph Lauren’s astounding impact on American sportswear.
2. Rodarte Perfects a Graveyard Set Show
Roadarte returns to NYFW after a long two-year hiatus with an incredible show held in a rainy graveyard located on the Lower East Side. Rodarte’s collection consisted of ultra-feminine tulle, floral headpieces, and romantic gowns, classifying the ethereal, gloomy aesthetic as the perfect backdrop.
3. Supermodels of the ‘90s and Early ‘00s Return
Iconic models such as Amber Valetta, Karen Elson, and Gemma Ward walked for Proenza Schouler this NYFW. Featuring looks consisting of acid wash denim and repurposed suiting separates, the show surely did not disappoint.
4. Prabal Gurung Projects Diversity
Prabal Gurung is no stranger to the idea of self-expression and the projection of controversy through fashion. During the designer’s Spring 2019 show, a stunning embrace of diversity through color and culture was apparent. The show put forth the joining of cultures and countries in representing models from a breathtaking 40 countries.
5. Lourdes Leon With Her Runway Debut
Madonna’s 21-year-old daughter made her runway show debut walking for Gyspy Sport. Rocking a seashell body chain bra paired with baggy ripped jeans, Lourdes Leon is definitely a rising style icon.
6. Wes Gordon Brings Color to Carolina Herrera
Wes Gordon engaged color for his debut show as creative director of Carolina Herrera. Maintaining the brand’s sophisticated yet ladylike image, Gordon brought the idea of youth and romanticism to Carolina Herrera through displaying a playful twist on elegant looks.
7. Rihanna Epically Celebrates Womanhood
NYFW epically came to an end with the Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie show. With diverse intentions in mind, the show embraced every aspect of womanhood through symbolic dances, a theatrical performance, and an accepting cast of models including two pregnant women. To add, one of these women, Slick Woods, actually ended up going into labor right after walking the runway and it has been confirmed that she was literally in labor while walking the lingerie runway show. I mean, talk about utter embrace of womanhood!
