Campus Profile: Mac Crispino and Zac Candelaria

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Mac Crispino (‘17) and Zac Candelaria (‘17)

The Mac and Zac Show is undoubtedly one of the best radio programs on Fairfield’s very own radio station, 88.5 FM. I recently had the privilege of interviewing Mac Crispino and Zac Candelaria, hosts of the Tuesday evening 8-9 PM time slot, and it was nothing short of an entertaining experience. These two guys know the sports world inside and out, work great opposite each other, and not to mention, have a great taste in music. Keep reading for more details on their kick a** show, and don’t forget to tune in!

For those who don’t know, what is the premise of your radio show??

We talk about the week’s best sports updates, and we play the music of our choice. People can call in and give us their views on any sport or music related topics.

When can everyone tune in?!

Tuesday’s, 8-9 PM!

What sparked both of your interests to pursue the show?

We are both very passionate about music and sports; we enjoy some good radio talk shows and one day we decided that we wanted to produce our own show so we got involved with WVOF on-campus radio and have not looked back since.

As best friends, how has working together brought you closer, and what lessons have you learned?

MC: We have learned to really work off each other in conversation often times improvising conversation of topics we randomly pick. It’s easy to talk to Zac and we have a blast joking around sometimes and going against each others opinions.

ZC: Working with my best friend has been an enjoyable experience! The show has given me the opportunity to grow, a lot of the topics that we talk about on air are not scripted, and because of that I have learned how to work off of Mac in any conversation.

What are your favorite topics to talk about on the show?

MC: Knicks basketball and the music we like to hear the week

ZC: Baseball updates are always fun, and anything relating music

What kind of music do you play?

We play any music from Reggae to Classic Rock, to House Music, to Rap. Anything we are feeling that week or our buddies are feeling we play.

What kind of process did you have to go through to make an FM program?

We started off our sophomore year working in the Web Studio getting some shows underneath our belt. We did feel new to the whole process and it took us a little bit to gel together, and to learn how to work the board. Eventually during our Junior year talked to the program director and they let us move up to FM which felt like a good accomplishment.

Do you guys ever practice, or wing it once you get into the studio?

If we know we are having someone call in before the show, someone we previously contacted, we will prepare questions and do research on them so it runs smoothly. If we don’t we usually just make a playlist, get a set of topics together and wing the conversations. Usually our friends will call in and make it easier to talk about topics.

What is your favorite thing about working with each other on this project?

It’s just fun to be with one of your boys and be able to talk to an audience about what you really feel. We are given the freedom to do whatever we choose during our time slot, the opportunity for us to be creative starts with this project. Lately we’ve had a lot of listeners and we are trying to get our names out there, who knows where we can take it! We have really grown into our own on this show, so it is exciting to see what could happen next.

What are a few of the goals you have for the remainder of the semester?

It would be awesome to win DJ’s of the month for the next couple months and record some shows to send to radio stations for future options!

Do you wish to continue the show for your senior year?

Yes.
