8 Ways to Unplug and Unwind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Between online shopping, social media, and BuzzFeed quizzes, we collegiettes spend a lot of time staring at screens. After a long day, the first thing we do is open our computers and start watching a show on Netflix. We spend enough time on our computers working on assignments; here are some ways to unwind without technology!

1.    Read a book
Yes, it’s hard for college students to read during the year. I’m an avid reader, and I can attest that the perfect way to relax after a long day is to read a chapter of a good book. Even ten minutes spent reading and diving into a different reality, can help ease any stresses you may feel.

2.    Go to an exercise class
Fairfield is now offering a variety of free exercise classes on campus. In addition, if you are a member of The Edge Fitness Club, there are numerous classes offered as a part of your membership. When you’re feeling stressed, sometimes the best thing to do is to sweat it out. Taking a yoga or Pilates class can leave you feeling both strong and centered.

3.    Go for a walk around Campus
When I find myself overwhelmed, sometimes the best thing to do is remove myself from the situation and go for a walk. Leave your phone behind and just take some time to clear your head.

4.    Try meditation
You know when you are laying in bed and you start thinking about everything and anything? Instead of worrying and over-thinking, try some meditation. I used to be a skeptic, but I promise it works!

5.    Chat with your roommate
After a long day, sometimes the best thing you can do is talk to your girlfriends. It’s never good to keep your emotions bottled up, take a second and talk to someone about it. More often than not, they are willing to listen.

6.    Try a new recipe
I firmly believe that food cures all ailments! Find a new recipe and make a fun dish for you and your roomies. Not only will you have a great time doing it, but you’ll also feel accomplished after it’s all done.

7.    Write it down
Sometimes I have so many thoughts in my head that the only way to organize them is to start writing. You may not know what you want to write, but the thoughts will make sense once you put them on paper.

8.    Color!
Remember how fun coloring was when you were younger? There are a ton of coloring books for adults. Not only will you be creating a work of art but also you can feel sophisticated while doing it.

I'm a senior Politics major with English and Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies minors. My passions include reading, writing, and Dunkin Donuts iced coffee. You can find me binge watching Netflix or loudly singing along to my newest music obsession.
