8 Basic” Halloween Costumes To Embrace This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

As Halloweekend rapidly approaches, college girls across the nation panic and scramble to find the best and most creative costumes. Searching through endless amounts of Pinterest boards and Instagram posts for inspiration, we try to avoid the dreaded label of “basic” at all costs.

However, while so many people mock anything with animal ears or an oversized shirt, we forget to appreciate the comfort, ease, and cuteness of these costumes. With many of these pieces already in our closets, why should we dip into our dwindling funds to buy an outfit that will be worn once in a sweaty townhouse? After all, aren’t we all ~balling on a budget~? It’s time to admit that these 8 “basic” costumes are often the best.

1. Animals: Cats, Bunnies, Deer, Dogs, Etc.

Although the possibilities of animal costumes are almost endless, they’re probably known as the most basic of all basic Halloween costumes. Despite this, these costumes are some of the easiest and cutest out there. If you don’t already have any, most sets of animal ears are only a few dollars. Throw them on with pretty much anything you want in corresponding colors, and you’re good to go!

2. Nerds

Anything plaid along with a pair of fake eye glasses is really all you need for this classic costume choice. Add some suspenders and/or pigtails if you wanna go all out. Whatever you have and feel comfortable with will be perfect!

3. The Ripped “Bloody” Shirt: Zombies, The Purge, Etc.

I know I’m not the only one whose Instagram feed was flooded with girls in cut up t-shirts this past Halloween, and I know I’m not the only one confused on what exactly they were supposed to be. Whatever you wanna call it, you can’t deny that it does look pretty cool. All it takes is an oversized white tee, some fake blood, and some post-midterms aggression, and you’ve nailed it!

4. Athletes

Even the least athletic of girls can throw on a jersey for the day and be an athlete. Instead of pacing the aisles of Party City, shop in your guy-friends’ closets for their most oversized jerseys. Even if you have no idea whose name is on your back, you’ll be ~super comfy~ and look great.

5. Frat Boys

I’ve definitely never seen a frat boy in a baggy button up and spandex shorts, but it definitely makes for a super cute Halloween costume. Not only is it easy, but it’s beyond comfortable as well. So cover yourself in pastel, and tell everyone to ~rush Sigma Apple Pie~!

6. Hippies

Spread some peace for a drama-free Halloweekend by being a hippie for the night. Nothing’s more comfortable or flattering than an off-the-shoulder shirt and some flowy pants. Add some bouncy waves and Birkenstocks and you’ll be ~groovier than ever~.

7. VS Angels

Who doesn’t wanna feel like a super model for a night? Walk out of your Uber looking like you just hit the runway, while you’re pretty much just wearing pajamas. Going out in a silk robe and wings? Sign me up!

8. Devils and Angels

The dynamic duo of basic Halloween costumes: devils and angels. Whether you’re on your own or pair up with your best friend, dress from head to toe in white or red, and top it off with a halo/wings or horns. There’s no doubt you’ll kill it this Halloweekend.
