20 Lessons I Learned by 20

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

I may not know everything, but after 20 years on this Earth, I’ve definitely learned a lot. I’ve learned about friends, life, and myself in general. The only way to learn is to go through life- laughing, crying, making mistakes and moving forward.

1.  Faking confidence is the start to real confidence. If you believe you can achieve anything, you’re on your way to making your dreams a reality. Walk with your head held high, always.

2.  There isn’t anything a cup of coffee and lipstick can’t fix. When in doubt, apply your lipstick and hit up Starbucks. I promise you’ll feel at least a little better.

3. Embrace your insecurities. Nobody is perfect, nobody. Everyone has what they consider flaws, but we truly all are special and beautiful in our own way. Whether it is your beautiful heart, mind, body or soul, you have no right to ever feel less than amazing.

4. Never let anyone change who you are. Your personality is what makes you unique. Never let anybody try to take away your sense of self.

5. Have more than you show and speak less than you know. Working in silence and not sharing every accomplishment you achieve is the best way to go through life. People will notice your success, you don’t need to prove anything to anyone.

6. Trust your gut. If you get a bad feeling about something, it’s probably a bad idea. Always trust your intuition.

7. Everybody is struggling with something, nobody’s life is perfect. No matter how spectacular someone’s life may appear, there is definitely something they have to deal with.

8. That being said, be grateful for your own life. Everybody has something to be thankful for. Whether it is your amazing family, education, job or friends, there’s always something to smile about.

9. Hold on to people who make you feel loved. Best friends are the people who bring out the very best in you and encourage you to grow as a person.

10. Realize your strength. When you’re enduring a hardship, you may feel nothing but defeat. After you have gotten past it, you’ll reflect and realize just how strong you are. You can get through anything life throws at you.

11. Stand up for what you believe in. Leaders are the people who change the world. You won’t get anywhere by going with the crowd when deep down, you feel differently.

12. Be polite to everybody.  A simple, “please” and “thank you” should just be common sense. But it can really make someone’s day that much better.

13. Be generous. Being generous doesn’t always refer to money. Donate your time, creativity, or love to someone who may really need it. Something as simple as a smile to someone who may be having a really hard week goes a long way.

14. Beauty and brains are a deadly combination. A beautiful girl may turn heads, but a beautiful intelligent girl will change the world. Your education holds a great deal of value, put time and effort into it.

15. You create your own path. You are the only person in control of your life. You can do anything you set your mind to if you persevere.

16. Life is extremely unpredictable. Always be adaptable to changes within your life. Appreciate what you have, but also know the future holds great things for you.

17. Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate. Spread positivity and love by gushing about things that excite you instead of things that anger or upset you.

18. Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. There are more important things to talk about than other people, open your eyes to the world around you.

19. When thinking about life, remember this: no amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of anxiety can change the future. Enough said, live for today.

20. Live in the moment. Life moves by extremely quickly, so cherish every night out with your friends, dinner with family, and of course, your days in college.
