Snow in April? What YOU Can Do to Help the Planet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

This weekend is Spring Arts, the campus-wide music and food festival that everyone at F&M has been looking forward to. It takes place outside, on Hartman Green, where we can listen to renowned artist , eat delicious food, hangout with friends, and soak up the sun. What’s the weather forecast for this highly anticipated event, you may ask? Cold, raining, windy, and a chance of SNOW.

April showers bring May flowers, right? NOPE. This was not the case this year. Winter seemed like it only lasted a few, short weeks. We did not have a classic, snowy December, filled with hot chocolate and sledding. Instead, it was humid, sunny, and warm. I even saw some Cherry Blossoms starting to bloom around the holidays – those poor, confused trees. The groundhog’s prediction on Groundhog Day of only two more weeks of winter seemed to come true, as March began to show hints of spring. While a few days in January and February were unforgivingly freezing, marked by a huge snowstorm that has been rightfully dubbed the “Snowpocalyspe,” there were a lot of times where the warm weather had people confused.

If you’re as annoyed about this as I am, you might be asking yourself (and cursing Mother Nature), “Why is this happening?” The answer is global warming, which causes a downwards spiral of climate change and abnormal environmental disasters to happen around the world.

There are a lot of very passionate people on this campus, but there is also a lot of apathy when it comes to showing up for events or actually taking the initiative to make a change. Instead of just worrying about the future state of the planet from the comfort of your bed, take action and be environmentally conscious! Unplug your electronics, reduce, reuse, and recycle, and eat less meat – if you start out by making small steps towards helping the environment, you could end up making a big impact.

Even though this information might have already been drilled into your head, it never hurts to have a little reminder, especially since we woke up this morning to snow in April.
